American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association

These railroads operate 50,000 miles of track in 49 states or approximately 38% of the national railroad network.

The American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) is a non-profit trade association representing the interests of the nation’s 550 short line and regional railroads in legislative and regulatory matters. In 15 states they operate at least 50% of the state’s rail network and in 35 states they operate at least 25% of the state’s rail network. Short lines touch in origination or term

In addition to its railroad members, ASLRRA has 480 railroad supply company members who are full participants in the Association’s affairs.

For Fact-abulous Friday we wanted to drop some knowledge about the 45G tax credit. We talk about it a lot, but these graphics explain why we're so focused on getting the credit modernization bill passed.

We all know the cost of everything is up, and that affects railroads too, especially if you're talking about making track upgrades.

Consider the Everett Railroad in Pennsylvania. Look at what things cost in 2005 vs 2024.

🪨Ballast -- 2005, $6.35/ton; 2024, $15.55/ton; a 145% increase
🪵Ties -- 2005, $35.85 each; 2024, $70.60 each; a 97% increase
🔨Spikes -- 2005, $50.60/100-lb keg; 2024, $103/100-lb keg; a 102% increase
🦺Contracted Services -- 2005, $33/hour; 2024, $74/hour; a 127% increase

But our host ENSCO saved the day with this staff snap of our dedicated committee members focused during a meeting presentation. THANK YOU to the whole ENSCO, Inc. team for hosting such a great event and providing an insightful tour of the Transportation Technology Center.

Thanks also to all the committee members who helped organize everything -- the Joint Committee Meeting is their show, not ours!

Speaking of member visits, the government affairs team recently took our summer interns on one last excursion to tour a Buckingham Branch Railroad facility in Virginia. The four were joined by Bruce Lundegren from the U.S. Small Business Administration's Office of Advocacy. It was a very informative and productive trip!

We 🩷 🚂 -- even when we're not working!

While on vacation in Washington, team member Mariel went down to Elbe for a trip on the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad. The whole family loved taking in the views along the way, and Superintendent Rowdy Pierce took some time to chat about business at the ASLRRA member railroad.

Many thanks to the entire team for a fun trip, especially engineer Chris, conductor Jackson and fireman Nate for ensuring a safe ride!

Welcome to new member Nevada Northern Railway Museum!

The Nevada Northern Railway maintains and preserves the Nevada Northern Railway National Historic Landmark in Ely Nevada. The 56-acre complex consists of 60 original buildings and structures with the oldest from 1906. They have four of the original steam locomotives, six of the original diesel locomotives, 100 passenger and freight cars and 168.9 miles of track. Nevada Northern Railway Museum’s long-term goal is to open the railroad to freight traffic once again.
