1986 Class GU Alum
“Problem of God”
Fall 2026 Book Club
Dear Georgetown University Members of the Class of 1986:
If you made the trek to GU for our 40th reunion this past May, there’s a pretty good chance you attended the powerful “Problem of God” Hilltop Dialogue panel at Gaston Hall.
The panel of three Georgetown theology profs included the one and only Rev. Otto Hentz, S.J. as well as Prof. Erin M. Cline. Their discussion touched on how to apply frameworks explored in GU’s seminal Problem of God class to our lives today. Cline wowed the crowd with her wit, expertise and thoughtful questions. She shared a few concepts from her hot-off-the-presses book: The Problem of God, published by Georgetown Press, which goes chapter by chapter through a range of belief systems and spiritual frameworks.
An idea arose from Class of ’86-er Liz ( Lobo) Vega: What if we started a book club (virtual, via Zoom) for 1986 alums, to read and discuss The Problem of God together? And what if Dr. Cline herself joined the Zoom to lead the discussion of her book?
We reached out to Dr. Cline — and she graciously accepted.
We are on!
