For May, USCB focuses on Dispelling Misinformation. As the junta intensifies propaganda for recognition, we dismantle their false promises. For our final post, we challenge the common junta talking point about "protecting humanitarian aid."

The regime blocks and controls aid in a way that clearly violates international law and moral responsibilities. During Cyclone Mocha in 2023, the regime refused to allow aid to enter the country. A similar pattern of refusal and control followed the earthquake in 2025.

Aid workers are attacked by the Burmese military at an alarming rate. According to the UNHDX, 214 aid workers have been killed, injured, kidnapped or arrested since 2017. Aid workers are killed both in attacks on IDP camps where they work and through deliberate targeting.

US Campaign for Burma would like to conclude our False Promises campaign by calling on the international community to be cautious and serious when dealing with the regime on the topic of humanitarian aid

For May, USCB focuses on Dispelling Misinformation. As the junta intensifies propaganda for recognition, we dismantle their false promises. This week's topic is the legacy of "peace processes" which have served no purpose other than to grant the junta extra legitimacy.

Burma has been in a state of armed conflict since just after independence in 1948. At the heart of the issue is the Burmese military government's refusal to grant autonomous rights to Burma's ethnic minority communities, which has led to numerous insurgencies since.

The military has historically promoted peace processes, but a closer look shows it is not interested in peace. The most recent example is the 2015 Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement, which did not include all armed groups and was quickly undone by the 2021 coup.

As the junta sets a new "ultimatum" to armed groups to engage in another peace process, USCB urges international observers to not fall for yet another shallow "peace process" which will, as history shows, lead to nothing but an excuse for further violence.
