We have exciting news! We just launched the 2023 Public Leaders for Inclusion Council.

The PLC is for public servants in elected, appointed, and professional positions in local, county, and state governments who are interested in challenging anti-Muslim bigotry and other forms of hate. Participants kick off the program in Washington, D.C., for a two-day summit where they meet other leaders from across the country from the private and public sectors. Afterwards, there are five monthly virtual seminars with leaders from prominent anti-bigotry and advocacy organizations.

This year we are partnering with Emgage, Minaret Foundation, Muslim Civic Coalition, Muslim Public Affairs Council - MPAC, and Shoulder to Shoulder to expand the program’s reach and impact.

The recent controversy at Hamline University is a reminder of the need for more attention to religious diversity in DEI initiatives. America Indivisible's brief guide to DEI and Religion offers a good starting place for public servants and others on this topic. You can read it here: bit.ly/3wRVf1i

Last month we kicked off the 2022 Public Leaders for Inclusion Council (PLC) in Washington, D.C.! It was the first time we hosted an in-person event In 3 years. The 2022 PLC came from across the country to learn how to build resilience in their local communities. Throughout the two days, they attended sessions like Understanding Racialized Anti-Muslim Bigotry and the Need for American Inclusion, Cross-Partisan Approaches to Challenging Hate, and the Dual Challenges of Pluralism and Polarization in the United States. We also had a museum visit to the National Museum of African American History and Culture!

On Friday night, we hosted a reception, Reclaiming Our Civic Voices, where we invited our coalition partners and members of our PLC alums. We were honored to have two fantastic keynote speakers, Paul Monteiro, Director of the United States Department of Justice Community Relations Service, and Melissa Rogers, Executive Director of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships and Senior Director for the Faith and Public Policy within the Domestic Policy Council share their thoughts and advice on building the civic health of bigotry impacted communities at the local, state, and federal level.

This event was just the start of the PLC, and we are excited to kick off the online part of our programming this week.

Thank you so much to our partners, the Aspen Institute's Religion and Society Program, and the IL Muslim Civic Coalition without their help, none of this would be possible.

We are so pleased to announce that starting today, Dr. Todd Green will be the new Executive Director of America Indivisible! Dr. Green has served on America Indivisible’s Advisory Board for the past three years, and is a nationally recognized expert on Islamophobia and religion and politics.

Before joining us, Dr. Green was an Associate Professor of Religion and Co-director of the International Studies program at Luther College. He is the author of The Fear of Islam: An Introduction to Islamophobia in the West (2nd Edition – Fortress Press, 2019) and Presumed Guilty: Why We Shouldn’t Ask Muslims to Condemn Terrorism (Fortress Press, 2018). Dr. Green served as a Franklin Fellow at the U.S. State Department in 2016-17, where he analyzed and assessed the impact of anti-Muslim prejudice in Europe on countering violent extremism initiatives, refugee and migrant policies, and human rights. He regularly and actively engages with civil society and government institutions on issues related to religious bigotry and its intersection with government policy.

Last year, we launched the third class of its Public Leaders for Inclusion Council (PLC). The 2021 cohort of 15 public officials and civil servants in city, county, and state governments convened a 6-month leadership development program addressing various topics related to combating bigotry against Muslims and those perceived to be Muslim. The PLC participants from 10 different states, including Washington D.C., built the capacity to address such challenges, deepened their knowledge and religious literacy, and left the program with a renewed commitment to building inclusion and combating bigotry in their own communities.

I am very excited to announce the launch of our fourth cohort his year. We hope to target even more states across the country, but we need your help. If you know anyone who would be a good fit for our program, please share this application with them. With your help, we will continue to build a civic network that is more inclusive, resilient, and extends across the country. The deadline is Sunday, February 20, 2022. 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️
