The Maritime Trades Department (MTD) is a constitutionally mandated department of the AFL-CIO representing workers of the United States & Canada in the ports and shipyards, on waterways and open seas, and in other allied trades. On August 19, 1946, the American Federation of Labor (AFL) issued a charter to the Maritime Trades Department (MTD) “for the purpose of organizing workers into labor unions and to form a more perfect federation of all trades.”

Today we celebrate the men and women who keep America moving.

From the shipbuilders on dry docks, to the mariners standing watch on deck, to the longshoremen moving cargo through our ports, as well as the dredge crews keeping our channels open, and to every allied trade who has stood with us in between.

Nothing in this country arrives on the shopping shelf by accident. It arrives because workers show up, and get the job done.

We will continue to fight until we have the wage, dignity, and respect we all deserve…and until this country reflect its true majority: WORKERS.
