April 25, 2020, marks the 75th Anniversary of the historic meeting between American and Soviet troops, who shook hands on the damaged bridge over the Elbe River. This event heralded the decisive defeat of the N**i regime.

The meeting on the Elbe represented a culmination of tremendous efforts by the many countries and peoples that joined forces under the framework of the United Nations Declaration of 1942. This common struggle required enormous sacrifice by millions of soldiers, sailors, and citizens in multiple theaters of war.

We also recognize the contributions from millions of men and women on the home front, who forged vast quantities of war materials for use around the world. Workers and manufacturers played a crucial role in supplying the allied forces with the tools necessary for victory.

The “Spirit of the Elbe” is an example of how our countries can put aside differences, build trust, and cooperate in pursuit of a greater cause. As we work today to confront the most important challenges of the 21st century, we pay tribute to the valor and courage of all those who fought together to defeat fascism. Their heroic feat will never be forgotten.

Honoring Veterans while Saving the Planet
Nowadays the number of people in the know who warn that the world is moving in the wrong direction with unpredictable disastrous consequences is rapidly increasing. With the absence of a serious government-level dialogue about how to avoid a looming disaster it is the responsibility of civil society and non-governmental organizations to offer some initiatives. Basic logic tells us that these initiatives should be offered by the two major nuclear powers – United States and Russia.
Both countries have a positive experience of working together as allies during WWII to defeat the common enemy – N**i Germany – and the upcoming symbolic date of April 25, when the military of both nations met on that day in 1945 on the Elbe river in the German city of Torgau to finish off the most brutal N**i regime.
A group of American and Russian organizations and individuals propose to celebrate this day with massive tree planting by honoring war veterans and at the same time contributing to the fight with climate change, since one of the most valuable and cost-effective ways to combat carbon emissions in the atmosphere is by planting the trees.
A team of researchers from ETH Zurich calculated that the world has an additional 2.2 billion acres of land suitable for reforestation. That provides enough room to plant an extra 1.2 trillion trees that would contribute to carbon sequestration.
More than half of reforestation potential is in six countries: Russia (373 million acres), the United States (255 million), Canada (194 million), Australia (143 million), Brazil (123 million) and China (99.3 million).
1.2 trillion trees could take up 205 billion tons of carbon from the atmosphere. That is two-thirds of the 300 billion tons of carbon released into the atmosphere from human activity since the start of the Industrial Revolution.
Every year there are 10 billion tons of carbon in new emissions. Planting 1.2 trillion trees could reverse climate change back at least for twenty years. Many countries might join this effort, but the United States and Russia must lead.
In 2019, Dendra Systems successfully used drones to fire pre-germinated seed pods into the ground. With just two people, operating ten drones, the company estimated that they could plant 400,000 trees per day. That is 146 million trees per year with just ten drones.
In the spirit of peace and friendship American and Russian defense contractors should establish a partnership with this company to divert enough of these drones from military operations to saving the planet.
With all the differences between Presidents Trump and Biden it looks like this idea is a rare case when both men have a similar vision. At the 2020 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland and later during his State of the Union address Donald Trump endorsed the idea of planting a 1 trillion trees.
President Biden said: “In my view, we’ve already waited too long to deal with this climate crisis and we can’t wait any longer. We see it with our own eyes, we feel it, we know it in our bones, and it’s time to act.”
President Obama during his visit to in 2009, has addressed a group of Russian students with the following words: “It's difficult to forge a lasting partnership between former adversaries, it's hard to change habits that have been ingrained in our governments and our bureaucracies for decades. But I believe that on the fundamental issues that will shape this century, Americans and Russians share common interests that form a basis for cooperation.”
What can be better than to start the movement from dangerous nuclear power confrontation to cooperation with such noble steps as honoring war veterans and simultaneously saving our beautiful planet. Those who want to honor a specific war veteran might attach a plaque with his/her name to the tree.
One such tree was planted on that day back in 2015 next to the sculpture of the Elbe River reunion in downtown Moscow in the presence of many Russians and Americans, including U.S. Embassy officials. The plaque next to the tree says that it is dedicated to the Friendship of Peoples of the United States and Russia.
We suggest that on April 25, 2021 this process should jumpstart on a grandiose scale across the United States, Russia, and many other countries. For additional information visit www.RussiaHouse.org/wrf.php

April 25,2020, marks the 75th anniversary of the momentous occasion when U.S. and Soviet forces met at the Elbe River successfully cutting the German army in two.

The "Meeting on the Elbe" signaled the approaching end of the N**i regime and was heralded around the world. Today, the joyfulness created by that open display of comradeship between East and West is needed more than ever.

For many years, American and Russian veterans, as well as public organizations, have kept the spirit of that Elbe River linkage alive with commemorations and reunions and by erecting monuments, plaques, and statues in our two countries.

This year we intend to bring the ceremony back to its starting point at the Elbe River, where we will reenact that historic moment. At the same time this event can be a great opportunity to engage in a long-awaited US-EU-Russia dialogue in view of unprecedented tensions that threaten the security of our nations and the world.
