Food for thought: "Our built environment now weighs more than all the living things, including humans, on the globe. Buildings, roads, and other infrastructure, for instance, weigh about eleven hundred gigatons, while every tree and shrub, set on a scale, would weigh about nine hundred gigatons. We have nine gigatons of plastic on the planet, compared with four gigatons of animals—every whale and elephant and bee added together."

Hot off the press! Sac State’s Parking Structure 5 (PS5) has received a Gold certification through Parksmart, which makes the first university in the country to achieve this level of certification for a sustainable parking structure.

“Sustainability, innovation, determination, and teamwork were key factors contributing to Parking Structure 5’s designation as a Parksmart Gold certified project,” said Tony Lucas, associate vice president for Business and Administrative Services.

“These are the moments I will miss as we move deeper into a warming world. Bill McKibben, the climate activist and author of several books on climate change, recently told a conference in Manhattan that we cannot solve this problem “one Prius at a time.” But I am nonetheless taking ownership of the climate crisis (or climate emergency, as some prefer), vowing never again to buy a car that uses gasoline and signing a contract this month with a solar company to install panels on our roof. It is surely too little, and probably too late. But if nothing else, it is my homage to the snow.“
