In 1984, 35% of U.S. 13-year-olds said they read for fun almost every day.

In 2025, that number had fallen to just 14%.
That’s a big change and a reminder that helping children discover books they genuinely enjoy matters.

So this week, help a young reader find a book they’ll actually want to read. Let them choose the story, follow their interests, and make time to read for pleasure.

Reading shouldn’t only be something children do for school. It should be something they want to come back to.

Strong communities are built through strong partnerships.

At a Title One school, where only 5% of students are reading at grade level, we provided books to help expand access to literacy resources and encourage a love of reading.

We also partnered with Community of Hope DC to distribute age-appropriate literacy packs during children’s well visits. Thanks to the generous support of the IHG hotel team in Washington, DC, employees assembled and delivered the literacy packs, helping families leave healthcare appointments with books they can enjoy together at home.
Whether it’s in schools, health centers, or community organizations, every partnership helps bring books closer to children and families who need them most.

Together, we’re creating more opportunities for every child to read, learn, and thrive.

Back-to-school tip for parents: don’t let reading get lost in the routine.

Between homework, activities and busy school mornings, reading for pleasure can easily become an afterthought.

Try keeping a book within easy reach, in the car, by the bed, or in a child’s backpack. Even a few pages during a quiet moment can help keep their love of reading growing.

Every visit can be an opportunity to build a child’s future.

Through our Books from Birth initiative, children visiting a WIC nutrition program can choose a free book during their appointment with a parent or caregiver. It’s a simple moment that encourages families to read together from the earliest years of life.

Research shows that children who enter kindergarten with strong early literacy skills are more likely to succeed throughout school and beyond. Making books available in trusted community spaces helps families begin building those skills long before a child steps into a classroom.

Because healthy beginnings include healthy reading habits.
