What a meaningful way to close the school year.

We were thrilled to support elementary students in Michigan with books to take home, helping them build their own personal libraries and stay connected to reading over the summer break.

According to school staff, the excitement was immediate. Students were eager, grateful, and ready to dive into new stories.

Access to books beyond the classroom is essential. During school breaks, many children experience “learning loss,” but consistent access to reading materials helps maintain and strengthen literacy skills.

Every book is more than a gift, it is a doorway into imagination, learning, and opportunity.

As these students head into summer, we hope each page they turn keeps curiosity alive.

Happy reading, and have a wonderful summer.

New federal data shows America's 13-year-olds have reading scores no higher than in 1971 and they haven't recovered from COVID. Meanwhile, 9-year-olds are bouncing back.

The divide is real. And it's growing.

This is why USA Reads exists, to make sure older students aren't left behind while attention stays on the early years.
Books. Support. Community. At every age.

When a baby comes in for a check up, being weighed and measured is routine.

At USA Reads, we believe books and early literacy guidance should be just as routine.

Since last year, we’ve been working with health professionals in Washington DC who now champion early literacy from birth. By giving families baby books and showing simple ways to read, talk, sing, and engage, these trusted health professionals help parents turn everyday moments into powerful opportunities for building foundational literacy skills.

Six‑year‑old Stephanie from Michigan is celebrating a “first book” day receiving her very own literacy pack with five books and learning resources to spark a lifelong love of reading.

Thanks to USA Reads and the World Literacy Foundation, children living in book deserts are finally getting the stories, imagination, and opportunities they deserve.

On International Children’s Day, we’re reminded that a single book can change the trajectory of a child’s life.

Behind these numbers are millions of children and young people whose futures are shaped by limited access to education and opportunity. Literacy is more than the ability to read, it is the foundation for confidence, learning, connection, and a better future.

When a child learns to read, new possibilities begin to open. That is why our work continues.

World Literacy Foundation partnered with a WIC nutrition program in West Virginia to install a book vending machine in their clinic. Children ages 0 to 5, there with their families for nutrition appointments, get to choose a book and take it home.

A laundromat might not seem like an obvious place for a library. But families are already there, together, with time on their hands.

World Literacy Foundation is partnering with Mrs. Georgia American Dr. Shanita Williams and Project Crown to build laundromat libraries across Georgia, putting books where families already are.

We're looking for partners to help us grow this across the state. Reach out or follow the link to support.

A donor recently reached out after friends and family made gifts to World Literacy Foundation in memory of their mother.

"Thank you and keep up the great work with literacy," they wrote. "My mom lived a life of service and would have been proud and thankful for the work you are doing."

If there is someone in your life you want to honor, a tribute gift is one way to do it. We will make sure it reaches a child who needs it.
