Six‑year‑old Stephanie from Michigan is celebrating a “first book” day receiving her very own literacy pack with five books and learning resources to spark a lifelong love of reading.

Thanks to USA Reads and the World Literacy Foundation, children living in book deserts are finally getting the stories, imagination, and opportunities they deserve.

On International Children’s Day, we’re reminded that a single book can change the trajectory of a child’s life.

Behind these numbers are millions of children and young people whose futures are shaped by limited access to education and opportunity. Literacy is more than the ability to read, it is the foundation for confidence, learning, connection, and a better future.

When a child learns to read, new possibilities begin to open. That is why our work continues.

World Literacy Foundation partnered with a WIC nutrition program in West Virginia to install a book vending machine in their clinic. Children ages 0 to 5, there with their families for nutrition appointments, get to choose a book and take it home.

That's a child leaving a doctor's office with something to read tonight.

A laundromat might not seem like an obvious place for a library. But families are already there, together, with time on their hands.

World Literacy Foundation is partnering with Mrs. Georgia American Dr. Shanita Williams and Project Crown to build laundromat libraries across Georgia, putting books where families already are.

We're looking for partners to help us grow this across the state. Reach out or follow the link to support.

A donor recently reached out after friends and family made gifts to World Literacy Foundation in memory of their mother.

"Thank you and keep up the great work with literacy," they wrote. "My mom lived a life of service and would have been proud and thankful for the work you are doing."

If there is someone in your life you want to honor, a tribute gift is one way to do it. We will make sure it reaches a child who needs it.

This time last year, Alex was on the brink of slipping into the summer reading slide. With a long school break ahead and no books at home, he was on track to join the 52% of children who lose ground in their reading skills over summer.
But something remarkable changed his trajectory.
Thanks to a steady supply of books throughout the summer from the World Literacy Foundation Alex didn’t fall behind — he took off. He discovered stories, characters, and worlds that pulled him in. He became an avid reader with a confidence that surprised even him.

As Alex puts it:
“Once I had books, it felt like my brain woke up. I wanted to read more every day.”
Access to books didn’t just prevent a slide — it sparked a lifelong love of reading.

Many companies give their employees the ability to donate to nonprofits directly through their paycheck, through platforms like CAF America. It's one of the simplest ways to give, and some of those employees have chosen World Literacy Foundation.

Because of that, we're able to keep putting books and literacy programs in front of children who need them. Thank you for choosing us.

Across many countries today, we celebrate Mother’s Day and honour the powerful role mothers play as their child’s first teacher. Through words, songs, sounds and playful moments, they lay the foundations for early literacy long before school begins.

For Sarah, this journey wasn’t easy. With limited education herself, reading aloud felt intimidating. But everything changed when her local doctor provided more suitable baby books and simple ideas to help her connect with her child.

With the right support, Sarah found her confidence — and her child found a love of stories.

The argument for teaching children to read is sometimes framed as charitable. It is more direct than that.

Over 70% of people in prison cannot read above a fourth-grade level, which means the same children falling through the literacy gap are, in significant numbers, growing up to commit the crimes that make communities unsafe.

Teaching a child to read reduces the probability that they become someone who hurts another person.

The victim of that crime does not exist. The family that would have been torn apart stays together. The neighborhood that would have absorbed that trauma does not have to.

Literacy does not just change individual lives. It changes what a community becomes.

In the summer of 2025, World Literacy Foundation partnered with the Salvation Army and Atmosphere Press to bring books to children at 16 Red Shield Youth Centers across Texas.

Every K-5 student in the Rocket Red Shield Reading program received a drawstring bag with books to read over the summer.

We're building on that this year and looking for partners to help us reach more kids. If that's you, reach out.

By supporting this program, you’ll help put books directly into the hands of children who need them most, fueling literacy, learning, and opportunity during critical summer months.
