This year, we showed up — literally.

The DC Charter School Alliance visited 11 schools across DC to see firsthand the incredible work happening for students. Our visits took us into classrooms focused on everything from the science of reading and high-impact tutoring to AI, career and technical education, and supporting students with dyslexia.

We observed wellness programs, math instruction, teacher coaching, community engagement, and high school transformation in action. Every visit reminded us why this work matters — and why DC charter schools are a national model for innovation and student success.

$15.7 million. That's what the DC Council's first budget vote added in new formula funding for public charter school students — who make up nearly half of ALL public school students in DC — narrowing the per-pupil funding gap by 30%. Funding public charter schools and DCPS fairly and equitably means that every student has access to a well-resourced education, regardless of which public school they attend.

This win comes from months of organized advocacy, close collaboration with Councilmember offices, and community mobilization. Thank you to the thousands of students, educators, families, and supporters who refused to be ignored this budget season: 320+ testimonies before the Council. 19,700+ emails. Nearly 400 advocates in the Council Chamber.

Thank you to Chairman Mendelson and Councilmembers Zachary Parker, Doni Crawford, Wendell Felder, Brooke Pinto, and Janeese Lewis George for helping champion funding equity for all public school students.

Council has until June 23 to . Read our full statement: https://bit.ly/3QiAd9x

An extraordinary achievement deserves recognition.

Congratulations to KIPP DC Legacy College Prep senior Gionni Foreman on being named a 2026 Gates Scholar—one of only 750 students selected nationwide from more than 61,000 applicants.

This highly competitive scholarship recognizes exceptional academic achievement, leadership, and potential. This fall, Gionni will continue his educational journey at Hampton University.

His success reflects years of hard work, perseverance, and dedication, and serves as an inspiration for students across the District.
Congratulations, Gionni—we're excited to see what comes next.

DC charter schools are evolving — and this year, that growth is visible! 🏫✨

Several schools across our sector moved into new, modern facilities in 2026, creating better learning environments for students across the city. One highlight: LAYC Career Academy PCS celebrated the ribbon cutting of its new campus in NoMa, featuring expanded classrooms, upgraded technology, and more resources to support young adults on their path to careers and economic mobility.

When DC invests in charter school facilities, students win. That's excellence in action.

Outstanding educators change lives and Rachel Leeds is a shining example.

Congratulations to KIPP DC Promise Academy’s Rachel Leeds for being named one of only 10 recipients nationwide of the Harriett Ball Excellence in Teaching Award, the highest honor awarded by the KIPP Foundation. Selected from more than 8,000 educators across the country, Rachel's recognition reflects the extraordinary teaching and learning happening in DC public charter schools every day.

We're proud to celebrate educators like Rachel who inspire students, strengthen communities, and help shape brighter futures.

Today, the DC Council takes its first vote on the FY27 budget — and DC charter school families from across the city have something to say about it.

In yesterday’s DC Line op-ed, their message was clear: a budget that dedicates $2,000 less per student to public charter schools isn’t fair to the city’s 48,000+ students who attend public charter schools.

More than 3,000 families have signed a petition. Nearly 400 advocates flooded the Chamber for fair funding. And today, the pressure continues.

DC Council, thank you for listening. Now it's time to act. DC’s 48,000+ public charter school students need you to close the per pupil funding gap for FY27. Future funding doesn't pay for teachers and classrooms this fall. Every day counts — and so does every fiscal year. Our students can't wait.

Caps. Gowns. Diplomas. Dreams.

Across the District, students at DC public charter schools are crossing graduation stages and beginning exciting new chapters in their lives.

Whether they're heading to college, entering the workforce, serving their communities, or pursuing other opportunities, the Class of 2026 has already demonstrated resilience, determination, and incredible potential.

Congratulations to every graduate, family member, educator, and school leader who helped make this achievement possible.

We are proud of you, and we can't wait to see what you accomplish next.

We are SO proud of the students and graduates of the Carlos Rosario International Public Charter School Small Business Program! At last week's GWHCC - Greater Washington Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Business Expo, Carlos Rosario alumni took home ALL THREE top spots in the pitch competition — and the school earned the Community Impact Award celebrating 10 years of the program.

From candles to catering to teas and spices, these entrepreneurs are building real businesses and contributing to Washington's economy. This is excellence in action — and exactly what DC’s public charter schools make possible. 👏
