📈 Over the last four years, more than a third of our public charter schools have grown the share of students hitting grade-level expectations (3+) by at least 10+ points in ELA and/or Math.

That's not luck, that’s consistency — that's educators and school staff showing up for students every single day. And it's not just the schools that crossed the 10-point mark. Across the sector, schools are making progress to get students closer to grade level and beyond.

This month, Democratic mayoral nominee Janeese Lewis George is hosting listening sessions in every ward for residents to share what they want to see for DC.

Nearly 48,000 DC students attend public charter schools. Whether you’re a public charter school student, alumnus, family, staff member, school leader, or supporter, you know firsthand what it takes for students to thrive. These sessions are a chance to bring that perspective directly to city leaders, in your own ward.

📚📈 DC Public charter schools are delivering for readers.

The data is in — and public charter schools are driving real gains in English Language Arts across DC for middle and high schoolers.

🔹 Middle school ELA proficiency grew by 5.1 percentage points
🔹 High school ELA proficiency grew by 3.4 percentage points
🔹 8 of the city's top 10 open-enrollment high schools for 3+ ELA performance? Public charters.

DC public charter schools are expanding access to high-quality ELA instruction — and the results speak for themselves. There's still more work ahead to make sure every student is reading and writing on grade level and beyond, and these gains show we're headed in the right direction.

About Tuesday night… 🎉

The DC Charter School Alliance joined our DC Students Succeed campaign partners to celebrate the policymakers moving education forward for DC students.

DC's young people are our future, and everyone in that room knows it. From championing equitable funding to investing in high-impact tutoring, our city's leaders show up for students every day — and we'll keep conspiring with them until every student can read, write, and do math on grade level and beyond.

Our advocacy efforts are most effective when public officials are willing to listen, and we are grateful to all our elected officials who stepped up this year for public charter school students. We wish an extra special thank-you to Chairman Phil Mendelson, Councilmember Janeese Lewis George, and Councilmember Zachary Parker, all recognized last night, for their work helping narrow the FY27 funding gap this spring.

Thank you to PAVE for creating the space for an evening of celebration and hope — because every student in this city deserves to be at grade level and beyond.

Growth this year wasn't limited to one group — we saw gains across a broad range of student groups.

The share of students approaching, meeting, or exceeding expectations (scoring 3+) grew in both ELA and Math for American Indian/Alaskan Native, Black/African-American, Hispanic/Latino of any race, Native Hawaiian/Other PI, Multiracial, and White students, as well as for English Learners, Economically Disadvantaged students, and students with disabilities, with charter schools outpacing the citywide average in ELA for these student groups.

Our schools and communities will never stop pushing for gains so that every student can read, write, and do math on grade level. But we are proud of this consistent, widespread growth across nearly every group. The data shows that work is moving in the right direction.

DC Public charter schools saw widespread gains this year, especially in ELA. WTOP’s Scott Gelman helped spotlight how one school, Friendship Ideal Middle School, is helping drive that progress.

Their residency model, which keeps the same teacher with the same students year over year, helped reading proficiency jump from 42.9% to 76.9% in one of their cohorts, with every student finishing on grade level.

For the fourth year in a row, DC's public charter schools outperformed the citywide average in ELA and Math in Wards 5, 7, and 8 — home to some of the city's most under-resourced neighborhoods, and where 64% of all public charter students citywide are enrolled.

Over half of all public school students in these wards attend charters, many of them founded and led by educators and leaders from these very communities. Charters aren't just present in these communities — they're leading academic progress there.

We still have real work ahead to lift proficiency to where our students deserve it to be — and we know it. But progress like this, consistent and community-driven, is exactly what we want to keep building on.

This year's DC CAPE results are in. This week, we're breaking down what they tell us about our public charter schools.

Let's be honest: we all have work to do to ensure every student in DC can read, write do math on grade level. It’s the work we show up for every day.

But this year's data also tells a story of real, consistent growth — in some of the city's highest-need neighborhoods, across nearly every group of students, and among schools open to every student who applies.
