Think back to your favorite book as a kid. Was it the adventure that hooked you? The magic? Or was it that feeling of seeing someone who lived a life just like yours?

For a lot of us, books were our first look at the world outside our front doors. But for many Black boys, that look in the mirror has been missing for a long time. When you walk into a library or a bookstore, you want to see yourself as the hero, the scientist, the dragon-slayer, or just the kid having a normal day.

At The Bookshelf Project, we see every day how a single book can change a child's trajectory. But it can’t just be any book. For Black boys specifically, representation isn't just a "nice to have": it’s a critical component of literacy, identity, and future success.

We’re excited to share that The Bookshelf Project recently received a generous donation of 12 Little Free Libraries! We gratefully accepted this gift because it beautifully aligns with our mission to expand access to books and promote literacy in our communities.

We are now seeking meaningful homes for all 12 libraries. If you, or someone you know, would like to support increased book access in your neighborhood, we would love to connect. We’re happy to coordinate delivery and help bring these libraries to life in spaces where they can make a lasting impact.

📚 We’re Calling All Literacy Ambassadors!

In communities across Washington, DC, too many children are growing up without books in their homes. At The Bookshelf Project, we’re changing that—one bookshelf, one family, one future at a time.
But we can’t do it alone.

We’re looking for passionate volunteers to join us as Literacy Ambassadors and help bring the joy of reading directly into children’s homes. Whether you enjoy building, creating, organizing, or connecting with families—there’s a place for you in this movement.

✨ Ways to Get Involved:
🔨 Assemble bookshelves that become the foundation of a child’s home library
🎨 Personalize shelves as a Bookshelf Artisan
📚 Curate and organize culturally relevant books
🚚 Deliver bookshelves and books to families across the community
This is more than volunteering—this is about building readers, strengthening families, and transforming futures.

👥 Bring your friends, your team, or your entire organization for a Day of Service and make an impact together.
