May is Mental Health Awareness Month. And we need to talk about something that doesn’t get said enough:
Mental illness is a Disability.

Depression. Anxiety. Bipolar disorder. ADHD. PTSD.

These are not character flaws, periods of weakness, or things to push through alone. They are recognized Disabilities that affect how people move through the world every single day.

And yet when most people picture “Disability,” they picture a wheelchair or a physical limitation.
The invisible ones get left out of the conversation and left behind by the systems meant to support them.

At 2GI, we see the full picture.

Here’s something else we know: mental health conditions and entrepreneurship are deeply intertwined. Research from UC Berkeley found that 72% of entrepreneurs surveyed reported mental health concerns, with founders significantly more likely to report depression, ADHD, and bipolar disorder than the general population.

That’s not a coincidence. The same traits that drive founders to build, think differently, take risks, and push past “impossible” are often the very traits connected to their mental health journeys.

Think about the founders who’ve spoken openly:
🧠 Ted Turner, founder of CNN, has lived with bipolar disorder.
🧠 Andy Dunn, co-founder of Bonobos, has spoken candidly about how bipolar disorder both fueled and challenged his entrepreneurial path.
🧠 Selena Gomez co-founded her mental fitness company Wonder Mind while living openly with bipolar disorder.

These aren’t cautionary tales. They’re proof that mental health struggles don’t disqualify anyone from building something great.

The stigma does more damage than the Disability ever could.

This month, we’re committed to making space for every kind of Disabled founder, including those whose Disabilities you can’t see. If you’re building something while navigating your mental health, we see you. And we’re here.

We are so proud of Kathy Long, Founder and CEO of NixIt AI, for being featured in Techchronicler’s Women’s History Month spotlight. 🥳

Not only did Kathy graduate from our Fall 2025 AI Cohort, but she won the final Pitch Competition for that cohort! Watching her build NixIt AI has been nothing short of inspiring.

As a neurodivergent woman and mother of four neurodivergent kids, Kathy is building the infrastructure she wished had existed for her family: an SMS-first AI companion that reduces cognitive load for neurodivergent individuals and families without surveillance or shame.

Her philosophy says it all: “The problem was never the brain.”

In this interview with Techchronicler, Kathy shares her winding 30-year career path, her deep commitment to ethical AI design, and why she fundamentally rejects “move fast and break things” when building for vulnerable communities. When your users are people whose trust has been broken by every system they’ve encountered, every design decision is a values decision.
