Jobs Have Priority Inc. In 1988 a group of business professionals began a Job Club at the Federal City Shelter in downtown DC. JHP works with over 500 homeless people a year.

Their idea was to provide one-on-one mentoring; supportive services such as transportation, tools and uniforms; and training to help the residents find jobs that would lead to self-sufficiency and permanent housing. The Job Club flourished, and the following year Jobs for Homeless People, as we were then known, received a grant through the McKinney-Vento Act to create a pilot program in the shelte

r. Officially incorporated in 1989, JHP's model has proven to be successful at helping people transform their lives through meaningful employment and permanent housing. The organization legally changed its name in 1993 to JHP, Inc., an acronym that stands for both Jobs for Homeless People and Jobs Have Priority, names that reflect our mission. Each person who enters a JHP program is given an assessment to determine both strengths and barriers to employment and housing. Case Managers then work with each individual to address and remove these barriers. For some it’s as simple as providing a job lead and a farecard. Others need more time and intensive services. Whatever the need, JHP ensures that each client has the tools and resources needed to effect a permanent change. Our goal is to ensure that the individuals we help find a job and a home and remain self-sufficient.

Jobs Have Priority, Incorporated began in 1988 as a Job Club at the Federal City Shelter in downtown DC. Officially incorporated in 1989, JHP’s model has proven to be successful at helping people transform their lives through meaningful employment and permanent housing. Today, JHP, Inc. operates two shelters in Prince George’s County and one in Washington, DC, in addition to a TANF Employment & Education Program in DC and a Homeless Employment and Assistance Center in DC and Maryland. With the support of our staff, volunteers, and donors, JHP, Inc. aims to continue making large footprints throughout our communities.
