NCNW Headquarters NCNW was founded in 1935 by illustrious leader Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune.

National Council Negro Women (NCNW) is an “organization of organizations,” comprised of 330 campus and community-based sections and 33 national women’s organizations that enlightens, inspires, and connects more than 2,000,000 women and men. Its mission is to lead, advocate for, and empower women of African descent, their families, and communities. It was founded in 1935 by Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune,

an influential educator and activist, and for more than fifty years, the iconic Dr. Dorothy Height was president of NCNW. Today, the NCNW programs are grounded on a foundation of critical concerns that are now “NCNW Priorities.” Our organization promotes education; encourages entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and economic stability; educates women about health and promotes healthcare access, and promotes civic engagement and advocates for sound public policy and social justice.

As we gear up for the March on Washington this Friday, take these words with you not only into the streets, but to the ballot box, into your advocacy, and into every space where decisions about our communities are being made. Let the voices of the Black women who came before us remind us that marching is not the end of the work. It is a call to action.

A historic derecho hit Northwest Indiana on Aug. 11, and most of the region has already come back online. But Gary, Indiana still hasn't been fully restored, and now won't be until Aug. 25.

Gary alone makes up nearly 40% of all remaining outages in the region. NIPSCO says it's because hundreds of poles need to be rebuilt from scratch, not just repaired. Gary was also initially left off the utility's restoration schedule entirely, only added back after residents spoke out.

This is a proudly Black, working-class city that keeps having to fight to be seen.

NCNW is leading the fight to keep access to the ballot 🗳️✊🏾

We've spoken out against efforts to restrict mail-in voting and stood firm in urging opposition to these measures. Today's ruling is an important step forward, but the fight is far from over.

To everyone who submitted comments, raised their voices, and stood with us: thank you. Your advocacy matters. We will keep fighting to protect every voter's access to the ballot.
