It is disheartening that we are once again being forced to add yet another name to the hashtag. This incident is a sad but necessary reminder that Black women are also disproportionately impacted by violence relative to their white counterparts. We must stop thinking that this is a black MALE issue. I want to see us be equally outraged by her untimely death as we were by George Floyd’s. No one thinks that he should have been suffocated for the petty crime using a counterfeit bill at a convenience store. We must extend the same grace to and acknowledge that a teenager’s attempt at defending herself while waiting for the police to get there isn’t a crime at all, let alone one that warrants an extra judicial killing. When we say Black Lives Matter, we mean all black lives. That include the lives of Black women.

We didn’t even have an opportunity to celebrate the rare instance of having a modicum of justice before the trigger happy police forces in America cut down a bullying victim who called them for help. Before the sun could set on the Chauvin guilty verdict, a minor who was already afraid for her safety after being threatened with assault by a group of peers was shot several times. The practice of shooting first and asking questions later must stop. It must stop because it only seems to apply to black and brown people. Police routinely take in aggressive armed white suspects without incidents. Unequal policing is not equal justice. Most importantly, it must stop because citizens of this country are civilians. We are not dealing with an occupying military force. They are civilian law enforcement officers, not members of a hostile foreign military.

Many people are asking why she had a knife. I want to know what you would do if you were 16 and a group of people showed up to your house to assault you. Would you call the police? She did (and it cost her her life). But what else would you do while you wait for the police to arrive? Would you wait passively while the aggressors teamed up to cause as much damage as possible in the window of time that they have while the officers arrive? There’s a lot to address here including harassment, bullying, stalking & police brutality. But self-defense is not the problem. It is a natural reaction that results from the sense of self-preservation most people have. It is easy to armchair quarterback her actions when 1) you know the outcome and 2) you’re over 30 with a fully formed brain. We don’t know what hell she has been living through recently that made her feel like picking up a weapon was the only way to survive until the police arrived. This story is heart breaking because this young girl was victimized for a long time as evidenced by the presence of the would be attackers at her residence. Bullies don’t just show up to your home; they work their way up to that. This matters because it would explain why she felt the knife was necessary. We are not going to vilify people for defending themselves. If a police officer is a afraid of a scared bullied teen aged girl with a knife, he needs a new job.

"The City of Louisville has reached a settlement with the family of Breonna Taylor, the EMT who was fatally shot in her sleep on March 13 by officers executing a no-knock warrant, WAVE reported.

The dollar amount was not immediately available, but WAVE reports it reaches into the millions of dollars and is expected to be one of the largest settlements following an officer-involved shooting in the city's history."
