ASEAN 101 – Session 1: Digital Economy: Opportunities for U.S.-ASEAN Cooperation

A recap of our ASEAN 101 briefing series. Open exclusively to Congressional staff, ASEAN 101 is designed to help participants engage with the most pressing issues shaping U.S.-ASEAN relations.

Our first session explored the digital economy as a key opportunity for strengthening U.S.-ASEAN cooperation. A special thank you to the Honorable Deputy Chiefs of Mission from, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand, as well as our moderator, Mr. David Weller, for leading an insightful panel discussion.

Featuring USAI YDP Alumna Abigail Verino

Abigail Verino is an alumna of the 2025 IMPACT! Program cohort. She recently graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, where she served as ASUC President and earned dual degrees in Legal Studies and Ethnic Studies.

This summer, Abigail is studying at the University of the Philippines, where she is exploring Philippine history and narratives. She will then return to Washington, D.C., to serve as an APAICS Fellow in the office of Congressman Mark Takano.

Reflecting on her experience with the IMPACT! Program, Abigail shared:

“The IMPACT! Program has deepened my pursuit of amplifying the needs of Filipino/Southeast Asian communities  through public service. The program enabled me to see myself in spaces where Filipino Americans aren’t represented. It also intensified my understanding of how our history shapes our current reality, and how civic engagement and political education rooted in Ethnic Studies can allow for radical awareness and change.”

Congratulations, Abigail, on your recent graduation and your acceptance into the APAICS Fellowship Program! Everyone at the US-Asia Institute is excited to see all that you’ll accomplish.

The Thai American National Internship Program (TANIP), in collaboration with the Royal Thai Embassy and the US-Asia Institute, provides emerging Thai-American leaders with the unique opportunity to intern in the offices of elected officials and public agencies at the national level.

TANIP is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that offers fellows a firsthand look at the American government and political system in Washington, DC, while encouraging them to reflect on their roles as the next generation of Thai-American leaders.

The ASEAN Diaspora Youth Development Program is modeled after similar programs USAI administers for young adults of the Thai, Filipino, and Mongolian diaspora, AYDP is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for young adults to gain a firsthand look at the American government and political system in Washington, D.C., engage civically, and reflect on the role they, as future leaders, can play in strengthening American relations with their respective countries.
