I'm devastated over the news of last night's horrific mid-air collision at Reagan National Airport. My heart is with the victims of the tragedy, their families who are living the unimaginable, and the first responders who rushed to the scene.

Today is Inauguration Day, and I want to name the uncertainty and fear many of you are feeling — it’s real and it’s valid.

But I also want to remind you of something powerful: Our movement has always been about the journey we make together, not the obstacles placed in our path.

This week, the House of Representatives chose to pass a version of the National Defense Authorization Act that includes a cruel provision taking health care away from trans children of military servicemembers.

These are families who wake up every day to show up for our national security, who sacrifice more than most of us will ever understand.

We are calling on the Senate to vote against any bill that includes this dangerous anti-trans, anti-military family provision, and remember the fundamental promise of our democracy: Everyone deserves dignity, respect, and the right to health care.

Transgender servicemembers are patriots who have proven their commitment, skill, and dedication to protecting this country.

But we know Donald Trump’s administration will go all in on hatred and division at the expense of our military’s readiness, our standing as a leader on the world stage, and the dignity of those who have made the courageous decision to serve their country. Banning thousands of qualified transgender servicemembers — who meet every qualification to serve and have been serving without incident, positively contributing to the nation’s defense for nearly a decade — would make our country less safe.

This is nothing more than transphobia masquerading as policy. We proudly support trans servicemembers and will take swift action to push back against this dangerous and discriminatory ban.

An executive order could be signed as early as Donald Trump’s first day back in the White House, which would force 15,000 people out of their posts

Together, we are strong, we are resilient, we are determined, and we are emboldened. Here's our path forward:

First, we will protect the most vulnerable among us — that's who we are and what we do. We're providing resources to help our trans and non-binary siblings survive the next administration and giving parents tools to talk with their LGBTQ+ children. Remember: Donald Trump isn't president yet. You have the same rights today that you had before Election Day.

Second, we're taking back our narrative. HRC’s exit poll data shows that 84% of Equality Voters chose dignity and love. A majority of people in battleground states believe trans people should be respected for who they are. This fight isn't just about politics — it's about human dignity, loving families, and the fundamental truth that every person deserves to be seen, safe, and celebrated.

Third, we're going back to basics. Yes, there are people in our churches, stores, and workplaces who voted against our rights. We must face that reality even as we reach for something better. We'll keep protecting LGBTQ+ workers, fighting for safe schools, and building communities where we're seen as neighbors, not strangers.

We are a movement that fights back. That is our inheritance. When they raided our bars and spaces, we protected each other. When they ignored the AIDS crisis, we cared for our own and demanded better. When they denied our relationships, we changed corporate America and won at the Supreme Court. Together, we won.

That's why my heart is filled with hope — not a naive hope but a gritty, sweaty, do-whatever-it-takes hope. So grieve today, but come back ready to fight tomorrow. Because this movement — your movement, our movement — continues.

Today’s resolution agreement from the U.S. Department of Education leaves no doubt: The Owasso School District failed Nex Benedict and many other vulnerable students under their care.

The evidence shows that officials were well aware of the hostile climate in their schools, yet repeatedly chose indifference and inaction when confronted. While no accountability measure can fully heal the grief and anger that Nex’s family and this community feel, today, a message has been sent: Trans and non-binary students have worth. They and all students have rights, regardless of who is in the White House. And they deserve the same access to a quality and safe education — just like every other child in America.

New challenges may come, but nothing can break a community that’s built power from pain for generations.

We survived a Donald Trump crisis once, and we will do it again.

Fortune 500 executives are doubling down on their commitments to keeping workplaces inclusive. This leadership is what we need right now. Thank you!

A record-breaking 1,400+ companies, representing more than 21 MILLION employees, are participating in the 2025 Corporate Equality Index.

My question to Molson Coors, Ford Motor Company, and any other businesses abandoning their commitment to inclusion: What side of good business do you want to be on?

“People who exist not only at the nexus of multiple identities, but of multiple movements for liberation will be the ones to show us a way out of this darkness. Even if most Americans don’t realize it, they’ve always been the ones driving us forward toward the light.”

These essays from the powerful voices of Erika D. Smith, Matt Brennan, Jaclyn Cosgrove, LZ Granderson, Eva Recinos, and Kevin Rector say it best: Our community has been showing up with pride, joy, and resilience over the last century. And I’ve never been more hopeful for the progress that lies ahead.

With q***r lives under threat, Our Queerest Century highlights the contributions of LGBTQ+ people since the 1924 founding of the nation's first gay rights organization.

I sat down with Morning Joe to unveil WE SHOW UP: EQUALITY WINS — our 2024 public education campaign. Make no mistake: We’re fighting for our basic freedoms. But we are not fighting alone. We are now 75 million Equality Voters strong, and Human Rights Campaign is committed to investing in key states to energize and mobilize our communities.

This November and beyond, we have the power to deliver historic wins at the ballot box, state houses, school boards, and more — for the future we deserve, without exception. Let’s get to work: hrc.org/weshowup
