Nothing about us without us. 🤍

In Nothing About Us Without Us: Patient Advocacy in Research + Policy, our panelists reflect on what it means for patients to have a real voice in the systems, research, and decisions that affect their lives.

From advocating for yourself in the exam room, to asking better questions about research, to speaking openly about what patients need and deserve, advocacy can take many forms.

Your story matters. Your lived experience matters. And meaningful change happens when patients are not just included in the conversation, but treated as essential partners in it.

Patient advocacy has helped change the course of cancer treatment. 🤍

In Nothing About Us Without Us: Patient Advocacy in Research + Policy, Isaac Chan, MD, PhD (UT Southwestern) shares the story of Herceptin and the role patient advocacy played in pushing a potentially life-saving treatment forward.

When patients learned there was a promising drug that wasn’t moving ahead, they asked a simple but powerful question: Why isn’t this available to us?

That pressure helped move Herceptin into clinical trials, where it ultimately became a treatment that has changed countless lives.

It’s a reminder that patient voices don’t just belong in the conversation—they can help shape what happens next.

Advocacy doesn’t have to start with something huge. It can start with your voice. 🤍

In Nothing About Us Without Us: Patient Advocacy in Research + Policy, moderator Amanda Rice from The Chick Mission shares a reminder that advocacy is about more than passing laws or taking on a massive public role.

Your lived experience matters. Your story matters. And speaking up—whether in a doctor’s office, a research setting, your community, or a policy conversation—can help shape the systems that impact patients every day.

Recorded live at Camp Breastie 2026, this conversation explores the many ways patients, survivors, thrivers, previvors, and caregivers can help influence cancer research, clinical trials, healthcare policy, and more equitable care.

Parenting through cancer doesn’t come with a perfect script. 🤍

In The Weight We Carry: The Invisible Mental Load of Parenting and Cancer, Morgan Walker, Brooke Desir, Melary Cruz, and Paige Mooney reflect on the questions, guilt, honesty, advocacy, and grace that can come with trying to care for your children while navigating so much yourself.

From answering the hard questions, to apologizing when you don’t show up the way you hoped, to modeling self-advocacy and remembering that parents are figuring life out, too—there is no one “right” way to do this.

Swipe through for a few moments from the conversation. 🤍
