Angelina and I are still learning about how to handle conflict in our marriage. We are not experts at all but here are 4 things that have helped us so much in navigating conflict.
1. We stopped trying to win
“Conflict isn’t about who’s right. It’s about protecting the marriage.”
We’ve learned that proving our point can cost us more than we realize. We want to create a marriage where both of us ban be heard and protect what we are building in our marriage.
2. We’ve learned to not let anger rule us
“Don’t respond from anger.”
James 1:19 reminds us to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.
Practical takeaway: If emotions are high, pause. Pray. Come back when you can actually listen.
3. Fight the problem, not each other
Your spouse is not your enemy.
We’ve learned to stop using “you always…” and “you never…” and start asking, “What are we actually trying to solve?”
You’re on the same team.
4. Choose forgiveness + grace
“Grace has to be bigger than the conflict.”
We don’t resolve conflict perfectly. But we’ve learned to apologize, forgive, pray together, and remember the covenant we made before God.
“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” — Ephesians 4:32
Marriage has taught us that conflict isn’t necessarily a sign that something is wrong. Sometimes it’s an opportunity to grow in humility, communication, forgiveness, and love.
We’re learning that the goal isn’t to “win” an argument. It’s to love each other well—even when we disagree.
And most importantly, we’ve learned that we don’t have to figure it all out on our own. We can invite God into the hard conversations too. What has marriage taught you about resolving conflict?
Live Love Strong!
