Start early: Research your options and prepare your finances as soon as possible.Crush your debt: Pay down as much debt as you can before starting. A high debt-to-income (DTI) ratio heavily limits your purchasing power.

Audit your lender: Review every document, fee, credit, and calculation. Do not assume the paperwork is automatically correct.

Compare and verify: Match your documents up, ask hard questions, and verify every detail throughout the entire process.

Advocate for yourself: This is one of the biggest financial decisions of your life. Make sure you understand exactly what you are agreeing to!
