This August, we’re featuring a two-part series that spotlights black women who were influential in D.C.’s Democracy Movement.

Right now our city’s self-governance is under attack by Congress. Now is the time to stand firm and organize to protect the power we do have, on our way to full sovereignty.

By spotlighting the legacy’s of these women we hope to inspire the same determination they had for achieving democracy and economic justice in D.C.

The first: Margaret Haywood, a former D.C. council member and Superior Court judge.

📢 On today’s second vote, we call on the DC Council to restore the District Child Tax Credit in the FY 2026 budget!

Moms and advocates have pounded the pavement and fought tirelessly to protect and expand the CTC. The Parker Amendments offer a smart, research-backed path forward.

According to a 2024 DC Fiscal Policy Institute study, these amendments can fund a targeted local CTC — along with other programs that support communities most impacted by our shrinking safety net.

✊🏾 It’s time to choose families, not cuts.

📲 Take action: Call or email your Councilmember TODAY and tell them to support the Parker Amendments and protect the CTC!
