This Labor Day, we’re thinking about the labor that never gets recognized.
The labor of birth. The labor of raising children. The labor of showing up — in the streets, in the hearing rooms, in the places where decisions get made about our families.
Earlier this year, we marched with mothers from across the country at the Black Mothers March on Washington, demanding support instead of punishment for families caught in the family policing system. Thank you to for creating that space.
This Wednesday, we show up again.
Join Mothers Outreach Network, National Nurses United, DC Jobs With Justice, and Spaces in Action for a community forum on the closure of the postpartum unit at Washington Hospital Center — DC’s busiest maternity hospital.

✏️ Advice on removing (expunging) your name from the Register
⚖️ Your options for a fair hearing on CPR placement
💬 Guidance during an open CFSA investigation, including Hidden Foster Care
❓ How a CFSA case may affect a custody matter

Today is the final day of our Basic Needs Drive. If you’ve been meaning to give — a kid’s t-shirt, a bed frame gathering dust, a gift card you never used — today’s the day.

We’re still collecting kids’ clothing (NB–13), new bed/futon frames, sheets, and IKEA/Visa gift cards for families moving through a housing transition or the start of the school year.

The DC Guaranteed Income Coalition is walking the halls of the DC Council this morning — 10:30 AM–12:00 PM — to share our refreshed platform and keep our priorities visible as DC enters a season of transition.

Coalition partners — including mothers, DC residents, and organizations such as Mother’s Outreach Network (Mothers Outreach Network), Serve Your City/Ward 6 Mutual Aid (Serve Your City/Ward 6 Mutual Aid), ONE DC (ONE DC), and Bread for the City (Bread for the City) — will be there together.

Basic needs are rising in DC — and this month, we’re giving in the tradition of mutual aid.

Now through August 31, we’re collecting kids’ clothing (NB–13), new bed/futon frames, sheets, and IKEA/Visa gift cards for families moving through a housing transition or the start of a new school year.

This drive is timed to Black August — a tradition rooted in showing up for one another in the places the state leaves empty.

Yesmine Holmes joined Mother’s Outreach Network on the Hill for a briefing about protecting and expanding the Child Tax Credit. The need for guaranteed income is more critical than ever: the cost of food and other living expenses make it harder for mothers to care and provide for their children.

Next month, MON Founder heads to the LTAS 2026 Conference in Chicago to present Poverty Is Not Neglect: What the First Child Welfare Guaranteed Income Pilot Reveals About the Criminalization of Black Motherhood. August 7–8 | Chicago, IL

Family policing — what is commonly called the child welfare system — criminalizes Black mothers for being poor. Melody’s presentation connects reproductive justice, economic justice, and guaranteed income to show what it takes to actually keep Black families together — not just in DC, but across the country.
