Have you ever had an operation almost go wrong? Leigh has.

In Cambodia, heading back to their accommodation, our team spotted shadows lining a dark street. The lead had a split-second choice - run or fight. They ran. A motorbike appeared behind them, and more people came out of the dark. The whole team made it out safe.

This wasn’t part of the mission - it was a street-level risk, not a trafficking encounter. But staying situationally aware in moments like this is exactly what keeps our team safe in the field.

Checking in for a few hours, not overnight. Paying cash or a preloaded card. A permanent “Do Not Disturb” sign- for days, refusing all housekeeping. A minor left alone in a room for long stretches, or appearing with adults they didn’t check in with.

That number comes from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime - and it’s the reality Shield of the Children works against every day. Investigations, arrests, prevention education - all of it exists to move that number, one child at a time.

It took one person noticing something. Australia made history.

A 17-year-old Indonesian girl was recruited overseasOperationMiranistralia on fraudulent documents, and exploited in Sydney brothels. Operation Mirani — a two-year Australian Federal Police investigation — uncovered the syndicate behind it, with simultaneous raids in Sydney and Jakarta.

In Jakarta, investigators found multiple passports belonging to women already recruited and scheduled to travel to Australia. They were intercepted before they ever arrived.

The result: Australia’s first-ever conviction for trafficking a child. The ringleader was sentenced to a non-parole period of 4 years and 5 months. A second man received 2 years and 8 months.

One person noticed. Investigators followed the trail. A child was rescued.

Trafficking can be hidden in plain sight. Sometimes the first step toward stopping it is simply not looking away.

The grooming is starting younger than it did 10 years ago.

A tri-county human trafficking task force confirmed it this August: grooming now starts at younger ages than previously documented, driven by earlier access to smartphones and social media. Kids are getting devices younger, accessing platforms built for older users, and predators know it - they’re deliberately targeting younger age groups because younger children have less developed critical thinking and are more susceptible to manipulation.

The tools changed. The vulnerability didn’t.

The system designed to protect them is the first place traffickers look.

50% of child trafficking victims in the US were previously in foster care. Half. Not a coincidence.

Group homes, temporary placements, transitional housing — anywhere children are frequently moved, isolated, and lacking consistent trusted adults, traffickers position themselves as the first person to offer stability, affection, and belonging. Foster children are statistically more vulnerable to that offer.

As the foster care system remains underfunded and overstretched, the vulnerability gap traffickers exploit keeps widening.

They were supposed to be protected. Traffickers saw an opportunity. Children who have already experienced instability should be met with safety, consistency, and trusted adults — not predators looking for an opening.

While half a million people attended the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota this month, the state’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force ran its 14th consecutive year of undercover operations there. This week: 6 men charged, including first-degree human trafficking and attempted r**e.

104 offenders caught at this single event since the operation began.
