In 2025, online enticement of children increased by 156%. 1.4 million cases in one year. 1.5 million reports linked to AI generated exploitation material. Deepfakes. Grooming chatbots. AI generated abuse imagery.

In the first half of 2024 there were fewer than 7,000 AI related reports. By the first half of 2025 that number hit 440,000. A 6,341% increase in 12 months.

The threat is not coming. It is already here.

1 in 4 girls. 1 in 13 boys. Experience s*xual abuse before the age of 18.

This is not happening somewhere else. This is happening in every community, every city, every country.

Shield of the Children exists to change this.

Leigh didn’t choose Indonesia by accident. He grew up there. Nearly 25 years of trust built into communities that most
organisations never reach.

That’s why Shield is there. And that’s why we’re staying.

Rescuing one child doesn’t slow the demand. The network just finds another.

Shield doesn’t stop at rescue. They remove the entire operation - permanently.

In 2025, child s*xual exploitation was happening inside 6 active brothels in Bali. Hidden in one of the most visited places on earth.

Shield moved in. Verified the intelligence. Worked alongside local law enforcement. Built the cases.

6 brothels shut down. 10 arrests. 183 cases supported. The network permanently dismantled.

This is what hard rescue looks like.

In 2025, a survivor in Indonesia reported her attack. Her own family didn’t believe her.

No legal help. No psychological support. No safe place. Fear and depression were taking apart her education and her daily life.

Shield’s partner team stepped in. Legal accompaniment. Psychological support. A safe house with daily monitoring. Sustained care — not a one-time rescue.

Today she is back in education. Supported, informed and empowered. Building a future that belongs to her.

This is what restoration actually looks like.

Shield of the Children works with 14 partner organizations across Southeast Asia to ensure every survivor gets real support — not just rescue.

Most parents don’t find out their child was being groomed until it is too late. Not because they weren’t paying attention - but because grooming is designed to be invisible.

These are the warning signs that trafficking investigators and child protection experts say to watch for. None of them alone is definitive. But together they paint a picture that should never be ignored.

Talk to your children. Ask the uncomfortable questions. Create a home where they feel safe enough to tell you the truth before a trafficker becomes the person they turn to instead.

Gabriella grew up in Colombia. After her father died she became the provider for her mother and sisters. When a childhood friend offered to help her find restaurant work in the United States she believed him. She had known him her whole life.

She arrived in America and was immediately forced into prostitution.

Her traffickers told her she owed them $10,000. Every week she was moved to a different brothel. She never knew what city she was in. She was told that if she tried to escape her family back home would be harmed.

For five years Gabriella lived as the property of her traffickers.

She was eventually rescued through a raid conducted by Immigration Customs Enforcement. Her trafficker was arrested.

This is what debt bo***ge looks like in real life. Not chains. A number. A threat. And a childhood friend who was never who she thought he was.

Gabriella’s story is documented by the Polaris Project. Her name and details have been changed to protect her identity.

Grooming doesn’t always end with a relationship. Sometimes it ends with a locked door.

Some victims are brought to a country on student visas. The moment they arrive their travel documents are taken. They don’t speak the language. They don’t know what city they are in. And nobody is looking for them because on paper they simply stopped showing up.

Shield of the Children founder Leigh Scarborough investigated cases in California where girls had not left a building in three years.

This is what grooming looks like when it gives way to captivity.

Online grooming follows a predictable pattern. Most parents never see it coming because it looks exactly like a normal online friendship.

A follow request. A kind comment. A conversation that grows deeper every day. Gifts. Flattery. Isolation from family and friends.

By the time exploitation begins the child believes she is loved. That is the design.

In 2025 over 21 million reports of suspected online child s*xual exploitation were filed in the United States alone. That is 58,000 reports every single day.

Traffickers go where children are. Right now that is every app on your child’s phone.
