Did you know that volunteering has been linked to stronger social connections, increased confidence, and even greater personal satisfaction? It is also one of the best ways to develop leadership and communication skills while making a meaningful impact on others.

As we reflect on another successful District 36 Conference, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to all of the volunteers who helped make this event possible. From registration and logistics to contests, education sessions, and behind-the-scenes support, your dedication made a difference.

Pictured here is Annmarie Walker, a former District Director of District 36 and one of many leaders who have given their time and talents in service to our members. As we prepare to close the District 36 chapter and begin an exciting new journey as District 220, we encourage everyone to consider volunteering. Some of the most rewarding Toastmasters experiences begin with simply saying “yes” to an opportunity to serve.

If you ever have the chance, ask Annmarie how joining Toastmasters International has benefited her. We are confident her answer may surprise you—and perhaps inspire your own Toastmasters journey.

🎙️ From Stage Fright to Spotlight

Ever been terrified of public speaking—or even being on camera? You're not alone.

In this episode of Toasty Talks, Victoria Smajlaj shares her journey from preferring the safety of print journalism to pursuing her ambitions in broadcast journalism. A second-year student at The George Washington University majoring in journalism and mass communications and international business, with a minor in criminal justice, Victoria serves as an on-air lifestyle correspondent at The George Washington University Television Station. She is also a staff writer and contributing social media director at The GW Hatchet.

Victoria credits Toastmasters with helping her gain confidence and strengthen her public speaking skills—skills that have helped her pursue her goal of becoming a broadcast reporter focused on business, culture, and global affairs. In this conversation, she discusses building confidence, finding her voice, and taking advantage of opportunities that once felt out of reach.

Whether you're a student, emerging professional, or someone looking to overcome a fear of speaking, Victoria's story offers practical insights and inspiration. Through journalism, she hopes to make complex issues clear, accessible, and relevant to people of every background—and that passion shines throughout this episode.

You never know where you’ll meet your next mentor. 🚌

For Nicholas Duarte, a first-year Honors student at Montgomery College studying Business Administration, it happened on a bus ride after a meeting—and it turned into a moment that changed everything.

Nicholas joined Toastmasters in 2025 and now serves as Outreach Chair for District 36, leading initiatives across the Washington, DC area. In this episode of Toasty Talks, he shares how consistent practice in Toastmasters didn’t just build speaking skills—it built the confidence to recognize and act on an unexpected opportunity, helping him build toward a career in strategy consulting.

Sometimes it’s not just what you learn… it’s what you’re ready for when the moment arrives.
