More than just a game 🏈 In 1998, Officer Jacob “JJ” Chestnut and Detective John Gibson gave their lives in the line of duty, protecting the U.S. Capitol and everyone within its walls. This game was born from that sacrifice - a way to ensure their families, and the families of all fallen officers, are never forgotten.

When The Guards and the Mean Machine take the field at Nationals Park, we play to honor their bravery and support the U.S. Capitol Police Memorial Fund. Join us this St. Patrick's Day as we continue a tradition of service and remembrance.

Today, we honor the memories of Officer JJ Chestnut and Detective John Gibson were fatally shot by a deranged gunman 27 years ago, July 24th, 1998, in the US Capitol.

After shooting Officer Chestnut at the “Library Door”, the gunman rushed into the nearest door, which was the back entrance to the Office of the Majority Whip. Detective Gibson was at his desk just a few feet inside that door. He was already standing because he had heard the gunfire. The gunman fatally wounded John but not before he was able to get off a shot that dropped the gunman in his tracks. Detective Gibson’s actions saved the rest of the staff inside the office.

Roughly four years later, Rep. Rick Renzi, and others including Reps Bill Shuster, Tom Osborne and others formed the The Congressional Football Game to honor and remember the bravery of Officer Chestnut and Detective Gibson and to support all the USCP officers who put their lives on the line to protect Capitol Hill every day.
