A new study out today from Insurance Institute for Highway Safety paired police crash reports with driver telematics data, finding that cellphone use prior to crashes is rarely reported in crash records. https://www.iihs.org/news/detail/study-shows-police-reports-undercount-cellphone-use-before-crashes

Underreporting of distracted driving has been a longstanding problem, making distraction appear to be a smaller issue than things like speeding or impaired driving. New tools like telematics are helping us close this data gap.

Police usually fail to note drivers talking, texting or fiddling with their phones in crash reports, a new IIHS study shows.

"Until now, safety experts believed drivers used their cellphones most at slower speeds,” said IIHS President David Harkey. “But data from insurance companies’ safe-driving apps show that, in free-flowing traffic, the opposite is true.”
