We are heartbroken by the passing of Ambassador William B. Milam, President of Right to Freedom.

We mourn not only a remarkable diplomat and principled leader, but a deeply compassionate human being whose life was devoted to the dignity and freedom of others. Ambassador Milam carried his responsibilities with humility and quiet strength. He believed in people, in their right to speak freely, to live with dignity, and to shape their own futures.

For those who had the privilege of knowing him, he was more than a public servant. He was a mentor, a steady voice in difficult moments, and a source of wisdom delivered with grace and kindness. His dedication to democracy was not abstract — it was personal, heartfelt, and unwavering.

Our world feels smaller without his presence, and the work of freedom feels heavier without his guiding hand. Yet his example — his courage, integrity, and humanity — remains with us. It lives on in the countless lives he touched, and, in the values, he defended throughout his life.

Bangladesh was deeply rooted in his heart. At a time when the country stood at crossroads, his presence was not merely diplomatic, it was profoundly human. He listened. He understood. He cared. Ambassador Milam believed deeply in the resilience and spirit of the Bangladeshi people. He stood beside them with quiet conviction, encouraging dialogue, stability, and respect for democratic principles when it mattered most. His name resonated as a trusted friend at uncertain times. His utmost sincere respect for the country’s aspirations left a lasting imprint on the nation’s journey.

Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and all who loved him. May they find comfort in knowing that his life made a profound and lasting difference.

His memory will remain a light for all who continue the struggle for freedom and human dignity.

We look forward to seeing many of our friends on July 15 at this upcoming event on Capitol Hill. Right to Freedom's ongoing work to promote democracy and human rights in Bangladesh and the broader region is made possible by the work of our committed group of volunteers, our Board of Directors, and the generous support provided by individual and institutional donors. We also recognize the critical role played by our founders, including Mushfiqul Fazal Ansarey and Ambassador William B. Milam, without whose vision and commitment during dark times we would not be here today.

Stay tuned for further information about opportunities to livestream the event on July 15 or watch videos in the days to follow.
