Isolation. Frustration. The emotional rollercoaster that follows the physical trauma of a brain injury. This side of the story is often overlooked, so we’re excited to share the latest ASHA Voices podcast from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Jerry Hoepner, a professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire, joins the podcast to discuss his insights into the array of social and emotional experiences that often accompany TBI.

Rep. Morgan Luttrell (R-TX-8), a first-term congressman and former Navy SEAL, is the only known member of Congress living with a traumatic brain injury. He sustained a TBI, among other severe injuries, in a harrowing helicopter crash during training in 2009.

Now, Rep. Luttrell is an outspoken advocate for TBI and the co-chair of the House Neuroscience Caucus. We are grateful for his leadership of the caucus and for his willingness to lend his powerful voice to such an important cause.

We know that, due to the nature of their work, our military members are at a higher risk for traumatic brain injury.

So it’s encouraging to see the Military Health System and the Defense Health Agency promoting the “Be a Brain Warrior” campaign throughout Brain Injury Awareness Month.

The campaign encourages service members to understand the risks, signs, and impacts of TBI, throughout their military careers.

It’s Brain Injury Awareness Day on Capitol Hill.

Leaders from the TBI community are here urging lawmakers to reauthorize and fully fund the TBI Act. They’re also urging legislators to make a series of improvements to the TBI Act, including:

• Expand the program definition and eligibility criteria to include hypoxic and other acquired brain injuries
• Ease the state match requirement from 50% to 25%
• Allow Protection and Advocacy (P&A) agencies access into VA facilities and federal prisons
• Require the Health and Human Services Secretary to examine the evidence base of brain injury as a chronic condition
• Increase funding for the TBI Act to $25 million — $19 million to the states and $6 million to the P&A's
• Reauthorize $6.72 million for the TBI program within the CDC's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC)
• Appropriate $5 million for the National Concussion Surveillance System

We applaud the Brain Injury Association of America, National Association of State Head Injury Administrators - Nashia , and the United States Brain Injury Alliance for leading the way.

Tinnitus can be as cognitive struggle. The same is true for traumatic brain injury.

What happens when a patient has both tinnitus and TBI?

That’s the subject of a recent podcast from NTRC member the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Listen as audiologist Suzanne Kimball and SLP Jennifer Tetnowski discuss collaborative care strategies to address cognitive challenges and improve patient outcomes.

Hear a discussion on tinnitus, brain injury, and cognitive load, and why an audiologist and SLP are working together to address patients’ needs.

Reps. Bill Pascrell (D-NJ-9) and Don Bacon (R-NE-2), co-chairs of the Congressional Brain Injury Task Force, last week introduced the Traumatic Brain Injury Act Reauthorization (HR 7208).

This legislation plays a crucial role in supporting the estimated 5.3 million Americans living with traumatic brain injury. By ensuring the continuation of vital programs, the TBI Act will:

• Increase funding for state-level grants, improving access to essential rehabilitation and support services.
• Provide resources for public education and prevention activities, empowering individuals and communities to safeguard against TBI
• Continue to support the a CDC’s National Concussion Surveillance System
• Recognize TBI as a chronic condition at the federal level.

NTRC is proud to support this important legislation. More details in the press release below …
