We hold gratitude and memory for the brave American men and women who, 82 years ago on D-Day, played a pivotal role in the liberation of Europe and the defense of the free world.

Ukrainians honor their sacrifice and their fight for liberty. Today, as we defend our own nation and the peaceful future of the European continent, we want to live up to their historic legacy by continuing the fight for freedom, democracy, and human dignity.

We had the pleasure of hosting our friends from the Ambasada Republicii Moldova în SUA / Embassy of Moldova to the USA to the United States. In his opening remarks, the Ambassador of Moldova, Vlad Kulminski, underscored the critical importance of supporting Ukraine to ensure the safety of the entire region, including Moldova. He made a powerful call for our guests to stand united, especially as russia continues to intensify its attacks on Ukraine.

The event featured a special discussion with the historian, author, former Member of Parliament of Moldova, and a leading expert on Eastern Europe, regional identity, and post-Soviet transformations, Dr. Octavian Ticu. He shared his profound insights into life in Eastern Europe under Russian pressure and influence. Also, Dr Țîcu provided an analysis of the security dynamics in the region and highlighted Moldova’s unique perspective on regional resilience and security cooperation.

We also extend our gratitude to Oksana Markarova, Chair of the Ukraine House Board and Advisor to the President of Ukraine on Reconstruction and Investments, for her inspiring remarks. She emphasized that Ukraine House is a dedicated space where friends of Ukraine can gather to hold these important discussions and enhance our shared cooperation.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this discussion and contributed such thoughtful questions and comments. A special thank you goes to the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova for co-organizing this meaningful event.

Ukraine House is honored to host a unique exhibition of levkas by the talented Ukrainian artist, Mykola Zhuravel.

What is levkas? Traditionally, levkas is a Byzantine icon-painting technique utilizing a highly durable preparation of chalk and animal-based glue. Mykola Zhuravel has reinterpreted this technique in his own unique manner, using it to carve rhythmic patterns and figures that result in stunning contemporary bas-reliefs.

The exhibition features 17 incredible works created in warm, earthy, honey-inspired tones. Reflecting on his renowned "Apiary" project, the aesthetics of the exhibition are deeply rooted in nature. Delicate, calligraphic details combined with the profound depth of the levkas create a truly immersive experience, transporting the viewer into a space dominated entirely by abstract forms and beautiful compositions.

Mykola Zhuravel is an internationally recognized artist who relocated to Toronto, Canada, with his family following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. He has exhibited extensively worldwide, including prominent showcases at the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011, the Ukrainian Institute of America, and most recently, a 2024 museum exhibition at the Two Rivers Gallery in British Columbia. His celebrated "Apiary" project transforms the life of bees into conceptual wood-levkas sculpture-paintings, beautifully contrasting the static geometric structure of beehive cells with the dynamic energy of the bees.

Don't miss the chance to experience this visual phenomenon. The exhibition is open to the public at Ukraine House in Washington, D.C., until the end of July. Please contact us at [email protected] to schedule your visit.

You can also explore the artworks on our website.

During the 20th anniversary of World Vyshyvanka Day, we had the privilege of hosting a beautiful exhibition of Ukrainian Rushnyky (traditional embroidered runners). These extraordinary pieces belong to two families who are great friends and dedicated supporters of Ukraine: Ambassador George P. Kent and his wife, Velida Kitaina Kent, alongside Kevin and Lesya Covert.

For this special evening, they shared their unique private collections with our guests, featuring Rushnyky from various regions across Ukraine. The exhibition was extraordinary, perfectly showcasing the incredible diversity and regional uniqueness of Ukrainian embroidery.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the Covert and Kent families for this honor. It fills our heart with joy to see our American friends so deeply cherishing and preserving the art of Ukrainian embroidery.

This year, Ukraine House celebrated the 20th anniversary of World Vyshyvanka Day in a very special way by officially launching our "United by Vyshyvanka" project.

Why is this initiative so important? Over our four years in Washington, D.C., we have realized just how much Ukrainians have in common with other nations around the world. We wanted to find a meaningful way to unite our cultures and demonstrate the strength and shared support we all need during times of uncertainty.

Last year, during our Vyshyvanka Day celebration, we thought about establishing the connection with other countries through the beautiful, shared art of traditional embroidery.

This year, eleven countries joined our initiative, including Norway, Luxembourg, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Slovenia, Sweden, Mexico, Romania, Poland, and Japan. We also proudly presented our own special embroidered piece reflecting our deep cultural heritage.

This is only the beginning. We warmly invite other countries to join this growing initiative and contribute their own embroidered textiles so we can create a complete, global map of embroidery traditions. Together, we can show how united we truly are, transcending borders, languages, and cultures.

If you would like to participate, please contact us at [email protected].

The Ukrainian vyshyvanka may soon become an officially recognized UNESCO intangible cultural heritage! During our celebration of the 20th anniversary of World Vyshyvanka Day at Ukraine House, Tetyana Berezhna shared an inspiring video message. She highlighted that Ukraine has officially nominated Ukrainian embroidery traditions for inclusion in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.

This is fantastic news for Ukrainians worldwide, and especially for our community here in the US. We can all support this great initiative by proudly wearing our Vyshyvankas to public events to share the values behind every pattern and thus protect our cultural heritage for a secure future.

We want to express our deepest gratitude to Tetyana Berezhna and the entire team at the Міністерство культури України. Thank you for your tireless work in protecting Ukrainian heritage and for all your efforts to preserve and elevate the beauty of our traditions.

It was a true honor for us to host the 20th anniversary of Всесвітній день вишиванки and officially launch the "United by Vyshyvanka" project. We are organizing this project alongside other embassies in Washington, D.C., to promote the art of embroidery as a beautiful bridge that unites nations. We are incredibly grateful to our participating partners, including Norway, Luxembourg, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Slovenia, Sweden, Mexico, Romania, Poland, and Japan, and we hope many other countries will join this growing initiative.

A special thank you goes to Tetyana Berezhna, Deputy Prime Minister for Humanitarian Policy and Minister of Culture of Ukraine, for her moving video message. She shared the deeply personal story of her own vyshyvanka and highlighted the important application to add the traditional Ukrainian embroidered shirt to the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Ukraine House was proud to have Леся Воронюк, co-founder of World Vyshyvanka Day, as she presented traditional Rushnyky (runners) rescued from the Kharkiv region after its liberation from russian forces in 2022. She underscored how vital it is to preserve these embroidery patterns to secure our future and our heritage.

We extend our deepest gratitude to Oksana Markarova, Advisor to the President of Ukraine on Reconstruction and Investments, for her opening remarks. She emphasized the meaning of the Ukrainian vyshyvanka as a living symbol of identity and resilience that carries our history, memory, and hope.

Thank you to James Deutsch, Senior Content Coordinator for the Office of the Secretary at the Smithsonian Institution, for his inspiring remarks on the initiatives they implemented to promote Ukrainian culture in the US.

A huge shoutout goes to the talented artisans from Norway, Mexico, and Ukraine for demonstrating the intricate art of traditional embroidery to our guests. We owe huge gratitude to George and Velida Kent, as well as Kevin and Lesya Covert, for giving us the extraordinary opportunity to showcase their unique collections of Rushnyky from different regions of Ukraine.

Finally, we want to recognize Ruslan Falkov and Sophia Kachur for wonderfully moderating the event and the launch of the project. We are also incredibly grateful to Kleynod - Ukrainian Watches for showcasing their incredible collections of watches, the SLAVA School of Ukrainian Music and Dance for their beautiful dance performance, the Gerdan band for their engaging music, and RUTA, the first Ukrainian restaurant in DС, for providing our guests with the delicious flavors of Ukraine.

There is so much more to discover with Ukraine! 💙💛
