WELCOME TO WASHINGTON, DR. EDDA FIELDS-BLACK

Get tickets to see Pultizer Prize-winning author, and hear her speak about her latest new book, with groundbreaking research, in COMBEE: Harriet Tubman, the Combahee River Raid, and Black Freedom during the Civil War.

On June 1, 1863, under cover of darkness three federal gunboats steamed up the Combahee River in South Carolina. This was the beginning of a daring combat raid…led by Harriet Tubman!

As Harriet Tubman guided “Lincoln’s gun-boats” up the Combahee River, she added combat pioneer to the other important roles she played during the Civil War: Union nurse, scout, and spy. How did Tubman become the first woman to lead a major military operation in the United States? Join Dr. Edda L. Fields-Black to discover the significance of the attack and how Tubman used her knowledge of the terrain, strategic thinking, and bravery to execute a mission that led to the liberation of more than 700 enslaved people and the destruction of sprawling Confederate rice plantations. Fields-Black has delivered the first deeply detailed account of this important event in her book COMBEE: Harriet Tubman, The Combahee River Raid, and Black Freedom during the Civil War which was awarded the 2025 Pulitzer Prize in History. Fields-Black brings an especially unique look at this incredible military operation as a descendent of the enslaved men and women who fought in the raid and in the process liberated themselves.

Following Dr. Fields-Black’s presentation, you’ll be able to ask questions in-person or via our online platform.

COMBEE will be available for sale and signing after the program.

We have been deeply moved by the Walk for Peace — led by 24 venerable Buddhist monks who walked more than 2,300 miles from Texas to Washington, DC, carrying a call for peace, understanding, and non-violence.

As Daughters of the Underground, walking in the footsteps of Harriet Tubman, we know the power of building a collective discipline, having shared purpose, and the light carried forth by being together in community.

Their message is simple — though not easy: Peace starts with each one of us.

May we all commit to doing more for peace.

May we all live in peace and be free from suffering.

May peace radiate from ourselves, to our families, our communities, our nation, and the world.

Learn more about the Walk for Peace Official ✅ or at in links in the comments.

Will you walk for peace today?

In November 2025, Daughters of the Underground walked 25 miles of the hallowed ancestral grounds in Beaufort County, South Carolina. It was deeply meaningful to us to walk with members of their community and in honor of Harriet Tubman and the Combahee River Raid. This is just a preview of our trip, and we’ll have more to share in the upcoming weeks. We are still so filled up and grateful.

In November 2025, Daughters of the Underground will be visiting Lowcountry, the geographic region along South Carolina's coastline of salt marshes and coastal waterways once known for its agricultural crops of rice, cotton, and indigo. Based on the forced labor and enslavement of highly-skilled Africans, this area was considered to be the wealthiest in the entire country before the Civil War. As descendants of West and Central Africa, they developed their own unique vibrant Creole culture, language, and traditions. We celebrate the living heritage and art forms, and support the on-going efforts to preserve their land, culture, and history in the federally recognized Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor.
