Safe hauling does not stop once the load leaves the dock.

Inspect cargo securement at 50 miles, then again every 150 miles throughout the trip. Vibrations, turns, and road conditions can all impact how a load settles and holds over time.

Routine checks are a simple step that helps prevent incidents and keeps both drivers and the public safer.

Broker accountability is a critical part of freight safety.

When safety is not a requirement in carrier selection, unsafe operators can continue to win freight and operate without consequences. Strengthening accountability helps ensure brokers prioritize safety performance, limit access for high-risk carriers, and support higher industry standards.

Without it, the system risks rewarding the lowest cost over the safest option, creating a race to the bottom that puts everyone on the road at greater risk.

FMCSA is proud to receive congressional support for Our Roads, Our Safety® through the introduction of a bipartisan House resolution recognizing the first week of June as Our Roads, Our Safety® Week.

Road safety is a shared responsibility. When every driver understands the rules of the road and the unique challenges large trucks and buses face, we can help prevent crashes, save lives, and ensure everyone gets home safely.

Uneven or under-secured loads can quickly become dangerous on the road. A simple rule makes a big difference: load evenly and use at least one tiedown per 10 feet.

These best practices are not just compliance details, they are critical safety steps that protect drivers, equipment, and everyone around them.

Safety starts before the wheels move.

Increasing the federal minimum insurance requirement ensures that only adequately capitalized, safety-conscious carriers operate on our roadways.

The current $750,000 minimum, unchanged since 1980, no longer reflects the true cost of catastrophic crashes.

Higher insurance thresholds deter high risk chameleon carriers from entering the market, by encouraging insurance companies do the onsite inspection and underwriting they were intended to do when it was originally set. It also creates a meaningful financial incentive for carriers to invest in safety and ensures that crash victims are fairly compensated without shifting the costs to taxpayers.

A secure load starts with the right equipment.

Before every trip, inspect your tie-downs for signs of wear, fraying, cuts, or damage. Using properly rated tie-downs and replacing compromised equipment can help prevent cargo shifts, reduce risk, and improve safety on the road.

A few minutes of inspection can make all the difference.

Trailer Safety Week is a reminder that safe journeys begin long before you hit the road.

Taking a few extra minutes to inspect your trailer, check your equipment, and ensure everything is road-ready can help prevent problems and protect everyone traveling alongside you.

Today is National Secure Your Load Day, an important reminder for all drivers, especially those operating large trucks, that unsecured cargo can cause serious crashes and put lives at risk.

Before you hit the road, take a few extra minutes to ensure your load is safe and secure.
