Today we celebrate Juneteenth — the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Texas finally heard what had already been declared: that they were free.

The gap between the proclamation and the announcement is part of the story. Freedom was real, and it was being withheld. That tension lives in scripture too — a God who declares liberation and a world that resists it, and a people who kept hope anyway.

We mark this day because we believe what the prophets believed: that justice is not optional, that freedom is not a privilege, and that the God we worship has always been on the side of the oppressed. Juneteenth is not a footnote in American history. It is a holy day — a reminder that justice, however delayed, is worth celebrating when it comes.

Happy Juneteenth. We honor the resilience, joy, and ongoing freedom struggle of Black Americans today and every day!

There's a difference between generosity that costs you something and generosity that's really just convenience dressed up.

This line from Sunday's sermon stopped us cold. It applies to money, sure — but also to time, attention, relationships, and showing up for people when it's inconvenient.

We live in a moment when financial anxiety feels completely rational — and honestly, it is. Costs are up, safety nets are thin, and most of us are just trying to hold it together. So a sermon about money and generosity could easily land as tone-deaf. This one didn't.

Sunday's message didn't guilt anyone into giving. It asked a harder question: what are we actually building our sense of self on? And what does it cost us to build it there?
