Twenty-five years ago today, America witnessed unimaginable tragedy.

As we remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001, we also remember the extraordinary courage of those who ran toward danger to help their fellow Americans.

Among them were the men and women of the maritime industry.

Ferry operators, tugboat crews, workboat operators, mariners, and the U.S. Coast Guard answered the call to help evacuate Lower Manhattan. Hundreds of vessels moved people away from danger and brought emergency personnel and supplies toward the crisis. In less than nine hours, more than 500,000 people were evacuated by water: the largest maritime evacuation in recorded history.

They did what mariners have always done: they answered the call.

Today, the American Maritime Congress honors the victims of 9/11, remembers the first responders who gave their lives, and pays tribute to the maritime professionals who demonstrated extraordinary courage, service, and resilience when our nation needed them most.

This Labor Day, we recognize the American workers who do more than keep our economy moving, they help keep our nation secure.

America’s mariners, shipbuilders, port workers, engineers, longshoremen, and maritime professionals form the backbone of a U.S. maritime industry that is critical to our economic and national security.

As the United States works to rebuild its maritime strength, we must invest in the American workers whose expertise, determination, and skill make that strength possible.

A stronger American maritime industry starts with American workers.
