What is the American Conversation Project?
● The opportunity: Catalyzed by the 250th anniversary of the United States, the American Conversation Project (ACP) is bringing people together across the country to share stories, listen deeply, and strengthen the bonds that hold us together.
● The challenge: Most of us want to be heard. But the ways we often engage in public life — surveys, social media, town halls — were never designed for that. They're fast. They're loud. They’re sometimes heated and don’t feel safe. And they rarely leave room for the kind of conversation that actually changes things. The result? People show up less. Trust erodes. And the decisions that shape our communities get made without the voices of the people most affected by them.
● The solution: ACP is working to rebuild a civic muscle that helps communities thrive — the practice of coming together in conversation, listening past assumptions, and finding common ground. One conversation at a time, in communities across the country. ACP is a nonpartisan national civic listening initiative led by the National Conference on Citizenship, in partnership with Cortico and a growing coalition of civic, cultural, education, faith, and media organizations.
● How it works: Through recorded small-group conversations hosted by local libraries — using technology to capture stories at scale — ACP will elevate the voices of everyday Americans to better understand how we strengthen our communities and our country.
● The ultimate vision: Through local depth and national coordination, ACP will surface insights from communities across the country and share them back — so people can hear not just what their neighbors are saying, but what Americans everywhere are thinking and feeling.
