After a devastating motorcycle accident left Jesi paralyzed, her world changed overnight. As she rebuilt her life, she discovered that disability benefits like SSDI often trap people in poverty by limiting their ability to work and save.

Jesi made the courageous decision to leave SSDI, but still relied on Medicaid to cover her high medical costs—only to find that marriage and modest savings could put her care at risk. ⬇️⬇️

“My boyfriend and I have talked about marriage a few times, and we’re not going to do it because I would lose my Medicaid, and it would cost us so much money for me to…

People with disabilities deserve better health care, better support, and better opportunities — not pressure to choose death.

The problem is not people with disabilities. The problem is a system that has failed to provide the supports, opportunities, and pathways to independence that people deserve. 👇🏼👇🏼

“Why are so many Americans still being told that disability means a life without opportunity?” In a commentary published at The Hill, Collette Divitto — a woman with Down syndrome who also serves as the…

That is why fraud, waste, and abuse in HCBS must be taken seriously. When Medicaid dollars are diverted, misspent, or poorly overseen, taxpayers are harmed—but so are the individuals with disabilities and families the program exists to serve.❗❗

Waste, fraud, and abuse aren’t just budget problems—they’re human ones. By Leslie Ford, Sara Hart Weir, and Rachel Barkley Medicaid was created in 1965 to ensure that Americans who were poor, elderly, or disabled could…

I am not a parent of a child with Down syndrome, nor am I a doctor who treats them or a politician who represents them.

I am a person with Down syndrome. And I am tired of being talked about instead of being listened to.

For decades, society has sent people like me a dangerous message: that our lives are somehow less valuable, less meaningful, or less worthy than the lives of everyone else.

The reality is very different, writes Collette Divitto in the Hill.

Medicaid’s Home- and Community-Based Services (HCBS) is one of the most important sources of daily support for Americans with disabilities. It can provide personal care, respite for family caregivers, supported employment, assistive technology, home modifications…

A wheelchair isn’t a limitation.‼️

For millions of Americans, it’s freedom.

Freedom to work. To travel. To learn. To participate. To live independently.

The problem isn’t the wheelchair—it’s the barriers that stand in the way.

When we create accessible communities, we create more opportunity for everyone.

A wheelchair doesn’t limit potential. It unlocks it. 👏🏻👏🏻

People with Down syndrome work, love, contribute, and thrive.

The real barrier isn’t their diagnosis — it’s a system that fails to support them.

That’s what we’re here to fix.

You may not realize this…‼️

State institutions were still sterilizing people who were mentally ill or disabled—well into the 20th century.

The language changed, but the practices didn’t disappear.
