Father Daniel L. Mode, CHC, CAPT, USN, a 38-year veteran Catholic U.S. Navy Chaplain who serves on active duty with endorsement and faculties from the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS), has been awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious service.

Vice Admiral James P. Downey, outgoing commander of the U.S. Navy’s Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), presented the award on Aug. 12 at command headquarters in the Navy Yard in Washington, DC.

Archbishop Broglio recently visited Maxwell Air Force Base where he celebrated Mass for AFROTC Field Trainees and priests attending Air Force Basic Chaplain Course.

Lieutenant General USMC (Retired) John Wissler will give the closing keynote for the Catholic Military Conference, focusing on faith, service, and Catholic leadership in the armed forces.

Serving over 39 years in the Marine Corps, Lt Gen Wissler commanded at every level from platoon to Marine Corps Component command, serving 34 months in combat operations in Iraq. He commanded III Marine Expeditionary Force in Okinawa, Japan; and U.S. Marine Corps Forces Command and Fleet Marine Force, Atlantic. While commanding in Japan, he led U.S. Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Task Forces for typhoon relief in the Philippines, and earthquake relief in Nepal.

Since military retirement in October 2017, John serves as an independent consultant across industry, foreign government, academia, and professional and collegiate sports. Among several ongoing activities, he is a Board Member of the The Saint John XXIII Foundation supporting the Archdiocese of the Military Services, USA.

John has a Bachelor of Science in Ocean Engineering; a Master of Science in Engineering Management; and spent a year at The Brookings Institution studying Foreign Policy.

Please pray for the men on the first-ever Grunt Padre Expedition this week. This Wilderness Discernment Retreat was named in honor of Servant of God Father Vincent Capodanno, a Navy Chaplain killed in Vietnam as he ministered to embattled Marines. The event is sponsored by the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, and led by the Saint Sebastian Institute in partnership with Wyoming Catholic College. ⁠

These retreats are specifically for men who previously have attended an AMS Discernment Retreat but are at the moment unable to leave the military in order to enter seminary. It is one way that the Archdiocese can remain in touch and continue to assist with discernment, while also providing fraternity and fellowship.⁠
