Just hours after his audience with the pope, Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA issued a strong and lengthy statement Oct. 12 against the planned livestreamed ex*****on by firing squad of Ford Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan, calling it a "public spectacle of barbarically killing our adversaries."

In his statement, Archbishop Broglio, former president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and head of the military archdiocese since 2008, said the dignity of the human person was at stake, and called upon "all men and women of good will to ask that this decision be reconsidered." He added, "As I would in the case of a procured abortion, I oblige any Catholics assigned to the firing squad to request to be excused from this action contrary to the teaching of the Church."

As a U.S. military base, Fort Hood is under the pastoral jurisdiction of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA.

Archbishop Broglio has issued a statement on the proposal to livestream the ex*****on of Nidal Malik Hasan by firing squad.

It reads in part, “In addition to supporting and subscribing to the statement by my brothers the Bishops of Texas, it is my duty to express my disapproval of what is proposed regarding the ex*****on of the terrorist Hasan in the Archdiocese entrusted to my spiritual care to be done by those for whose salvation I have been constituted as the Archbishop for the Military Services, USA.....

I call upon all men and women of good will to ask that this decision be reconsidered and, at the very least, do what is possible to keep the exposure to the live-streaming of the proposed ex*****on from the vision of the young and impressionable. As I would in the case of a procured abortion, I oblige any Catholics assigned to the firing squad to request to be excused from this action contrary to the teaching of the Church.”

"The announcement of the ex*****on and livestream also faced criticism from the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA. Archbishop Timothy Broglio reaffirmed the Catholic Church’s opposition to the death penalty in a statement to EWTN News.

'Catholic teaching about the death penalty is clear,' Broglio said. 'Already the Catechism of the Catholic Church, even before its revision by the late Pope Francis, indicated that in a country such as the United States where the means exist to protect society from such criminals, the death penalty was inadmissible.'"

The decision to livestream the ex*****on of Fort Hood mass shooter Nidal Hasan faced strong criticism from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA.

Archbishop Broglio has issued the following statement in response to the announcement of the establishment of the Office of Religious Affairs from the Secretary of War:

“The Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, is hopeful that the newly established Office of Religious Affairs (ORA) will enhance and strengthen the support offered to the men, women, and their families who serve in the military and to the chaplain corps who strive to accompany our soldiers, sailors, and airmen across all service branches. Placing spiritual readiness alongside other departmental priorities and shortening the timeline between identified field needs and senior decisions can have the practical effect of resolving legacy constraints that historically limited chaplaincy support. This Archdiocese appreciates the initiative and welcomes its implementation.”
