Peoples Forests Partnership Equitable partnership with forest communities to drive direct climate finance to Indigenous Peoples, traditional owners and local communities.

01/22/2025

We are a global alliance of nature-guarding communities, organizations and companies working together to ensure that nature-guarding communities receive direct financing for biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation.

Our main objective is to amplifying the voices of Indigenous Peoples, traditional owners, local communities, and Afro-descendant communities, ensuring their needs and priorities are at the forefront of conservation efforts.

🌱We are a committed to ensuring that the voices of all communities around the world who defend nature are heard in national and international spaces.

✊🏻The guardians of nature need the whole world to recognize the importance of their work in preserving life.

“Nature does not belong to us. We are part of it.”

With this premise, Indigenous Peoples continue to protect 80% of the world’s biodiversity, despite facing significant challenges in terms of security and a lack of financial support.

Today, we hear the testimony of Juan Gabriel Padi, a young Indigenous leader from Toribio (Cauca), Colombia 🇨🇴, who urges us not to give up in this fight to preserve life.

Collaboration fuels conservation! 🤝 By connecting communities around the world, we shorten learning curves and build stronger solutions together.

Our founding member Gustavo Sanchez, President of Red Mocaf & member of Alianza Mesoamericana de Pueblos y Bosques, is sharing views on activating access to direct finance.

From his perspective, PFP can play a crucial role in navigating with communities on these issues, facilitating processes and sharing valuable information that enables them to access fairer and more respectful projects.

He also highlights that, when it comes to environmental issues, alliances are essential to ensure that efforts are truly effective. 🤝🏽🌱

According to Pablo Jamioy from OPIAC Colombia, dialogue and prior consultation processes with communities in environmental financing projects are essential.

These spaces allow for a detailed understanding of each territory’s needs, so that the different actors can support solutions through consensus rather than imposition, achieving a more harmonious collaboration with the local guardians of nature.

This is one of the strongest messages that Indigenous communities are bringing to the COPs.

For Pasang Dolma, an Indigenous activist from Nepal and a member of PFP, it is important that the environmental conservation efforts of local communities are both publicly recognized and financially supported.

According to Dolma, PFP is also a key player in strengthening international cooperation networks that amplify the voices and demands of these communities on a global scale.
This was one of the main demands of Indigenous representatives at .

📢During the panel “Direct Financing and Biodiversity Credit”, organized by PFP, communities and private sector representatives shared their positive experiences in managing direct financing.

🌿We discussed about how to prevent these strategies from worsening the climate crisis and, instead, improve relationships among stakeholders, ensuring that resources reach those who defend the land. Here are 4 key conclusions:

1️⃣The ways of life of Indigenous communities and their relationship with financing are different from those of the Western world.

2️⃣Support must start from an understanding that their belief system is designed to preserve life.

3️⃣Strategic partners must first understand how the community’s relationship with nature works.

4️⃣Colombia is one of the countries in the world that can generate the most carbon credits, which are in high global demand. However, mandatory prior consultation must be present in any future negotiations.

For the first time, a COP includes a Green Zone dedicated to citizen participation, under the slogan “The People’s COP.” This initiative allows communities from all over Colombia to engage in direct dialogues, featuring activities such as educational talks, documentary screenings, and indigenous ceremonies.

🌱Communities showcase their traditional knowledge and local products while expressing their environmental concerns. Topics discussed include direct funding and the recognition of their conservation solutions. The Peoples Forests Partnership has supported activities in the Maloca, promoting dialogue spaces to influence environmental policies based on social needs.
