Props to any group of people who are committed enough to making the world and more accessible place for women that they stay with it for almost 40 years.

There’s always a risk of staying with something because it worked in the past, and falling into the trap of “we’ve always done it this way“. A little bit of research shows that they report an annual curriculum review. Again props. Focusing on legal defensibility isn’t a bad thing as long as that legal defensibility is tied to the jurisdictional subtleties in each location material is taught.

And it’s hard to listen to what feels like harsh feedback. No matter who you are - it always sting a little. But we need more people doing good work not less people.

500Rising does not position themselves as the only ballot authority in women’s self-defense. There are a lot of good approaches and a lot of good people. We all need to step up to the plate, though, and do better when the feedback tells us that we are missing the Mark.

What IS it good for?

Inviting women to take a trial class for you martial arts school/dojo. PARTICULARLY if that picture represents a real woman in YOUR dojo.

This does not communicate “self defense”though because it demonstrates the wrong set of skills for a self defense workshop designed to equip women with useful skills they can apply in their lives without additional classes required.

Highly encourage physicical training BUT……

Don’t be misled by traditional- outdated even- attitudes. Not only do you miss the MAJORITY of the critical information, it could even create serious legal problems you can otherwise manage for-
