United Planning Organization

United Planning Organization UPO helps Washington, DC residents overcome barriers so they can lift themselves into economic security. UPO Unites People with Opportunities.

They become the change agents of their lives and reach their full potential. We help people reach their full potential; give then a toolkit for success; and continue to help them -- just as you maintain your home, we help people throughout their lives. As Washington, DC’s only nonprofit Community Action Agency, we’re hands-on every day, improving equity across the District.

- Our job training an

d placement open doors to the first job security our customers have ever had. And we’re never “done” with them. They become part of the UPO Family for life.
- We help people manage their money so they can build wealth and keep their homes. Reach out for free 1-on-1 help at our Financial Empowerment Center.
- We help to build new affordable housing.
- We run the District’s largest Early Head Start program. We also have elders who mentor the children.
- We prepare youth for college and careers. And we give scholarships to outstanding, community-minded students from families with low incomes.
- We help people like YOU amplify their voices to advocate for their communities.
- We protect our neighbors’ health, even if they’re living on the streets.

You’ll hear from people with lived experience, practitioners, and policy experts about how homelessness in DC, and the District’s response, has changed. Despite the progress, great challenges remain. Let’s figure out what to do next.

Happy Father’s Day!

“A man must be big enough to admit his mistakes,
smart enough to profit from them,
and strong enough to correct them.” — John C. Maxwell

We appreciate all of the fathers and father figures,
including ones who take care of their families,
who are advocates for their friends,
who are leaders in their communities.

You are the heroes who show up and make a difference. We wish you a wonderful day!

Celebrate Juneteenth!

Juneteenth, also known as Jubilee Day, Emancipation Day, or Freedom Day, symbolizes Resilience, Overcoming, and Equality. Washington, DC celebrates Juneteenth with parades, music festivals, and educational events.

Eating red foods is a tradition, likely from Yoruba and Kongo people who were brought to Texas to be enslaved. In both cultures, red can represent power, sacrifice, and transformation.
