🇺🇸 A Moment of Honor and History 🇺🇸

Following the reenactment of a powerful Grand Opening in Massachusetts, a truly special moment took place. A call was made for all Veteran, Active Duty, National Guard, and Reserve brothers to approach the altar for a group photograph.

It was a profound sight to behold. Given the deep, historic roots of Prince Hall Masons serving in the military, capturing this image at this specific point in time and space felt more than fitting—it felt destined.

Praise be to the Honorable Most Worshipful Grand Master Prince Hall
A true visionary and an impeccable executioner of his mission. He was:

• A Champion of Human Rights

• A Fighter for the Underserved

• The Voice for the Unheard

He gave us a seat at the table and a voice that continues to resonate today. We thank him forever and forever for the foundation he built and the light he continues to provide.

What an incredible journey back to "Where It All Began."

This weekend, the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of the District of Columbia, under the steadfast leadership of Most Worshipful Grand Master Alvin Smith, made a historic pilgrimage to the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Massachusetts.

The occasion? The 12th Biennial Symbolic Reopening of African Lodge No. 459.

The Roots of Our Craft
Prince Hall Freemasonry found its soil right here in Massachusetts. On March 6, 1775, Prince Hall and 14 other men of African descent were initiated into Lodge No. 441 of the Irish Constitution at Castle William Island. This spark led to the chartering of African Lodge No. 459, the foundation of Black Freemasonry in America.

A Weekend of Remembrance
Our delegation stood on the hallowed grounds of Copp’s Hill Burying Ground to pay homage at the monument of our founder, Prince Hall (1748–1807). To walk the same streets where these pioneers fought for "Liberty and Fraternity" is a powerful reminder of our charge as Masons.

Highlights of the Visit:
• Brotherhood in Action: Connecting with the MWPHGL of Massachusetts to celebrate our shared lineage.

• Symbolic Reopening: Witnessing the 12th Biennial ceremony, reaffirming our commitment to the principles laid down in 1775.

• Historic Tribute: MWGM Alvin Smith and the DC brethren honoring the legacy of the man who started it all.

Thank you to the Jurisdiction of Massachusetts for the warm welcome. We return to the District of Columbia inspired, invigorated, and ever-mindful of the history that paves our way forward.

Historic Brotherhood in Boston!

The Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of the District of Columbia was in the house in Boston, Massachusetts! Our very own Most Worshipful Grand Master Alvin Smith traveled to the "Cradle of Liberty" to participate in the 12th Biennial Symbolic Reopening of African Lodge No. 459.

This historic event, held from April 23rd – 26th, 2026, commemorates the legacy of Prince Hall and the founding of "Where It All Began."

Highlights of the Journey:
• A Royal Performance: MWGM Smith stepped back in time, donning full colonial regalia to play the role of Senior Steward (SS) during the symbolic reenactment. Seeing our Grand Master honor the original line officers of 1784 was a powerful testament to our living history.

• Words of Wisdom: The ceremony concluded with powerful remarks from both MWGM Alvin Smith and MWPGM Phillip David. Their words echoed the principles of Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth, representing the District of Columbia with the utmost class and distinction.

It was a weekend of reflection, reverence, and rejuvenation. We are incredibly proud of how our leadership continues to shine a light on the legacy of Prince Hall Freemasonry.
