✨March 2026 is officially Afghan American Heritage Month in California.✨

Last week at the State Capitol, Senator Aisha Wahab, the first Afghan-American elected to the California Legislature, joined the California Commission on APIA Affairs, the Afghan-American Foundation and community members for the signing ceremony of the resolution.

Afghan Californians have helped shape this state for generations, serving as service members and first responders, building small businesses, caring for patients, educating students, and strengthening our communities. As part of the broader AAPI community, we share a commitment to dignity, inclusion, and ensuring our communities are seen, valued, and heard.

This moment is more than recognition; it affirms the contributions of Afghan Californians and honors a legacy that future generations will continue to build upon. CAPIAA and our partners look forward to continuing this work, uplifting Afghan-American voices, expanding visibility across California, and strengthening civic engagement.

Building on this moment, CAPIAA and AAF will be convening a community session, and we’ll share details soon.

This year, Eid and Nowruz come to us hand in hand, carrying both joy and renewal.

Eid marks the end of a month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and spiritual renewal. Nowruz welcomes a new season of hope, rebirth, and new beginnings.

Yet we mark this moment with heavy hearts, mindful of the pain and uncertainty that so many Afghans continue to face.

As families and communities gather to observe these occasions, we pray for peace in Watan and for all those living through violence, loss, fear and injustice.

May this Eid bring mercy and peace.
May this Nowruz bring healing and hope.

From all of us at AAF, Eid Mubarak and Nowruz Mubarak!

Nazeer Paktyawal was a father. He was a neighbor. He was one of America’s wartime allies. He should still be alive.

His death in ICE custody demands answers. His family deserves the truth. The public deserves transparency. And those responsible for his care must be held accountable.

AAF is calling for an immediate, independent, and transparent investigation into the circumstances of his death.

While the world marks International Women’s Day, millions of Afghan women and girls are denied their most basic rights: education, work, and participation in public life.

Under Taliban rule, the denial of these rights has become policy.

Today, we recognize the courage and resilience of Afghan women in Afghanistan, and of Afghan women in diaspora who continue to raise their voices and keep the world’s attention on this injustice.

The world must not look away.
Their rights are not negotiable.

Ramadan Mubarak from all of us at AAF!

May this month bring peace to your homes, light to our hearts, and compassion to our communities.

To our Afghan-American family and all Muslims observing: walk into Ramadan proud of your faith and its teachings. Our faith is rooted in compassion and justice, and it has long been part of America’s fabric, just as our community has. We belong here, we contribute here, and we will remain here.

May this month soften our hearts, strengthen our character, and widen our generosity.

Today, we extend our gratitude to three founding board members whose terms on the Afghan-American Foundation board have concluded: Haroon Azar, Freshta Taeb, and Jawaid Kotwal.

As a community-led organization, we have often been building and flying AAF at the same time; responding to urgent needs while also creating the programs, partnerships, and capacity to sustain the work. Their steady presence helped us grow, serve, and advocate with clarity and purpose. We’re grateful for their lasting impact on AAF and for the ways they have strengthened our community.

Please join us in extending our deep gratitude for their service.

Today, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the audacity he asked of all of us: to believe in a country where everyone can live with dignity, equality, and freedom, and where we build what selfishness tears down.

May we choose other-centered leadership, protect one another’s humanity, and keep building our beloved communities.

Today, AAF together with our partner, submitted a letter written by resettled Afghan women in response to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, holding Congress to its stated commitments to Afghan allies and Afghan women, and rejecting a politics of fear that breaks promises to those who stood with America.

Nearly 90 Afghan women signed this letter publicly, and additional verified women signed but requested anonymity due to credible safety concerns for themselves and family members.

We condemn violence without hesitation. But you don’t deliver justice by smearing tens of thousands of families who came through lawful processes and are rebuilding their lives in the United States.

Please read, share, and let's stand with our Afghan allies, friends, neighbors and co-workers.

As we begin 2026, we want to pause and say thank you.

Thank you to everyone who showed up for our community, in visible ways and in quiet ones, in moments of urgency and in the long stretches in between.

We move into this year grounded in gratitude, and committed to continuing this work with care, humility, and resolve.

AAF joined 130 organizations across the country to deliver a clear message to the Administration:

Do not use a tragic, isolated act to justify dismantling humanitarian protections or targeting Afghan refugees, asylum seekers, or immigrant communities.

Collective punishment is not security.
Discriminatory policies are not justice.
And reversing decades of bipartisan humanitarian pathways will only deepen fear, instability, and harm.

The sign-on letter calls on the Administration to immediately reverse course, to restore asylum and immigration processing, end blanket suspensions affecting Afghan allies, and reject the rhetoric that dehumanizes our communities.
Full letter in slides.

AAF will continue to speak out, protect our community, and stand with all those fighting for fairness, dignity, and due process.
