Poll-watching plans should not overlook voting activity involving residents of nursing homes and other care facilities.

Vulnerable residents have the right to vote—and the equal right to decline. Assistance must protect their choices, not replace them.

Work with your county election office to understand:

• How voting assistance is provided
• Who may enter facilities for election activity
• Who may handle voting materials
• Whether authorized observation is permitted
• How concerns should be reported

Every potential ballot represents a person.

Helping someone register requires their consent.

2020 Texas: A care-facility social worker was accused of submitting voter registrations for 67 residents without their signatures or effective consent.

"None of the SSLC patients gave effective consent to be registered, and a number of them have been declared totally mentally incapacitated by a court, thereby making them ineligible to vote in Texas."

She pleaded guilty in 2022 and received deferred adjudication.

DECEMBER 8: ARGUMENTS, QUESTIONS, AND WHAT COMES NEXT.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear oral arguments in RNC v. Mi Familia Vota on December 8, 2026. Mark you calendar.

Attorneys will present their positions, and the justices will question them about federal law and Arizona’s election procedures.

Listen for how they address citizenship documentation, the 90-day restriction, and state authority.

Oral arguments are a step toward a decision. They are not the final ruling.

The hearing is scheduled after the November 3 election.

Poll observers serve an important function in precincts and residential facilities.

Trained poll observers should document objective facts:

• What happened?
• When and where did it happen?
• Who was responsible for the procedure?
• Which rule or safeguard may be involved?
• To whom was the concern reported?

Do not investigate voters, publish private information or confront people based on suspicion.

Document facts. Protect privacy. Report properly.
