🏺From Pottery to Possibility

At 73, Gitarani Pal of West Bengal turned a small loan into a lifeline. After losing her husband, support from a community group of fellow elders helped her strengthen her pottery livelihood, support her children, and build a home.

Today, she continues to work alongside her son, carrying forward her craft with pride and dignity.

Gitarani’s story reminds us: older persons are not defined by vulnerability. With the right opportunities, they can earn, contribute, care for their families, and shape their own futures.

Through livelihoods, healthcare, caregiving, digital empowerment and access to rights, HelpAge India works to help more older persons live with independence, purpose and dignity.

India is on the cusp of one of the world's largest demographic shifts. By 2050, nearly one in five Indians will be 60 or older; a testament to rising life expectancy and a moment ripe with opportunity to strengthen research on gerontology, long-term care and age-related policy for generations to come.

American Friends of HelpAge India (AFHI) is proud to mark the launch of the Institute for Longevity & Ageing Research (ILAR), HelpAge India's new platform for evidence-based research, policy influence and innovation in healthy ageing. AFHI Board Chair Pramod Bhasin joined in congratulating HelpAge India on this milestone and reaffirming our commitment to supporting the Institute's mission from the U.S.

Built to work hand-in-hand with government, corporates, educationists and communities, ILAR will generate the evidence needed to make ageing in India more dignified, secure and inclusive.

We invite the diaspora, philanthropic partners; research funders and everyone who believes ageing deserves a seat at every table then this is an invitation to join this movement.
