Last week I graduated from the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health with my Master of Public Health!!!
Honestly, this MPH was built from grief, rage, love, exhaustion, purpose, and an unwavering refusal to accept the way families navigating stillbirth and baby loss are too often overlooked in public health.
After Aaliyah died I quickly realized that lived experience alone was not always enough to be heard in the rooms where decisions are made. I wanted the language, training, research background, and credentials to sit at tables not just as a bereaved mother, but as someone prepared to challenge systems, influence conversations, and help build something better.
This journey shaped so much of my work:
🤍 Expanding bereavement support and programming through Aaliyah in Action
🤍 Advocating for stronger stillbirth prevention attention through PUSH
🤍 Researching gaps in postpartum and perinatal bereavement care
🤍 Building future initiatives focused on equitable, intentional support after loss
There were many moments during this program where I was deeply aware that I was studying the very systems that failed my daughter and so many other families. That awareness didn’t weaken me, it didn’t temporarily anger me, but ultimately, it clarified my purpose.
I’m leaving this program even more certain that bereavement care deserves to be taken seriously within maternal health. Families deserve better systems. Better support. Better standards of care. & I fully intend to continue pushing those conversations forward.
This degree belongs to every version of me that kept going when there were days I wanted to do anything but. & more than anything, this degree belong to Aaliyah. 🤍💛
