Every year on September 22, we are invited to celebrate National States & Capitals Day by educating ourselves and others about the 50 states and their capitals. As we grow in our careers and embrace the role of , AIA’s YAF is taking this opportunity to share significant architectural sites in some of the nation’s state capitals. What are some of your favorite buildings, parks, or structures in your state capital? Share in the comments!

SANTA FE, NM | The San Miguel Chapel is considered the oldest existing church in the United States. The Spanish colonial mission church was built of adobe in the early 1600’s shortly after Santa Fe was founded, and the construction is often credited to the Tlaxcalteca people living in the region at the time. It has been rebuilt twice in its history, but elements of the original structure likely remain in the current building. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places and became a National Landmark in 1968. It is a contributing property to the Barrio de Analco Historic District’s designation as a National Historic Landmark District.

Those of us in the Northern Hemisphere celebrated the 2025 summer solstice at 10:42 p.m. EDT on June 20. Nearly halfway through the year, this day holds the longest period of daylight that we see all year. As the sun shines on us, it’s a great time to shine light on what you have been up to so far this year, where you’re going next, and how summer shakes up your routine.

What are you worried about? What excites you about the next few months? What have you learned that you’ll take with you into the next season? Share in the comments below!
