Our founder, the late, Dr. Carolyn Graham vision for The Mary Elizabeth House was to provide the support necessary for teen mothers to become women of character and influence, with an economic stake in their communities. Her vision continues today, as we encourage and help young women and their families who have aged out of the foster care system.

Thank you Dr. King for your resilience and determination to seek justice and equality.

In the first few years after leaving foster care many young mothers will face extreme obstacles, one of them being homelessness. 1 in 4 mothers will end up homeless for at least a night. Aging out of the foster care system seems especially problematic for young women and those with children. Of youth reaching 18, 20% in foster care will instantly become homeless, and only 1 out of every two who age out will have some form of gainful employment by the age of 24. That is why The Mary Elizabeth House is committed to working intensely with these young mothers to ensure they develop the skills necessary to take control over their lives and care for and protect their children.

More than half of families with low incomes reported not receiving support from some of the most common safety net programs. That is why we are so committed to providing resources and educational services to help break the cycle of poverty and give young mothers and families the fair chance to flourish.

Did you know, single mothers are more likely to have low income households than single fathers? This is just one of many challenges faced by the young women we serve at the MEH. Having aged out of the foster care system, our young mothers experience many obstacles that make it difficult for them to thrive.

That is why we are committed to providing services such as family support, residential housing, life-skills training, parenting, and counseling services to improve their lives and advance future generations to come. Consider donating today, as we continue to of generational poverty.
