📣Good news! Contrary to what you may have read, the Presidio Export Pen in Texas is empty.

Animals’ Angels investigators usually dread visits to the Presidio Export Pen. It’s the last stop for horses before they cross the border into Mexico, where horse slaughter remains legal. For years, we’ve documented horses arriving frightened, exhausted, injured, and bound for a brutal end.

Today, the story is very different.

Because of the USDA’s restrictions related to New World Screwworm, horses are not currently moving through the normal export pipeline into Mexico. During a recent visit, our investigators found the Presidio Export Pen empty.

If you’ve seen claims that horses are piling up and starving at border holding pens — or urgent pleas asking you to pay to “rescue” horses supposedly trapped there — approach those claims with caution. Ask questions. Request documentation. Verify the facts before sending money.

For years, Animals’ Angels has documented how fear and urgency can be used to pressure compassionate people into paying broker fees or inflated “bail” prices. As the Screwworm restrictions disrupt the slaughter pipeline, misinformation may become another tool used to protect those who profit from it.

We’ll continue monitoring the situation and sharing what our investigators see on the ground — not rumors, but facts.

🐴🇺🇸 HORSES ARE PETS, NOT MEAT 🇺🇸🐴

Most Americans don’t know that horse slaughter plants were shut down in the United States in 2007 after horrifying undercover investigations exposed extreme cruelty, including horses being repeatedly stunned and dismembered while still conscious.

What happened next is even more important.

❌ Horse abuse did NOT increase.
❌ Neglect cases did NOT skyrocket.
❌ The horse industry did NOT collapse.

The truth is that horse slaughter is a demand-driven business. Kill buyers purchase horses at auctions to fill orders for foreign slaughter plants in Mexico and Canada because there is a market for horse meat overseas.

But here in America, we don’t eat horse meat.

So why are we shipping our horses thousands of miles across borders to be slaughtered for foreign consumption?

Today, less than one-half of one percent of America’s horse population enters the slaughter pipeline each year. These horses can be absorbed through rescues, rehoming programs, sanctuaries, and private buyers when given the opportunity.

That’s why the Van Drew–Titus horse protection language in the Build America 250 Act is so important.

🇺🇸 HAPPY JULY 4TH 🇺🇸

As America celebrates 250 years of freedom, we can’t help but think about the horses who helped make that freedom possible.

They carried our soldiers into battle. They built our communities. They worked alongside generations of Americans.

Today, they need us more than ever! Hundreds of horses are currently stuck in the horse slaughter pipeline! Suffering from starvation, abuse and neglect as they continue to be discarded at auctions and kill pens across the country! Right now it’s an easy outlet for poor and unethical horse owners who use auctions and kill ones as easy dumping grounds! While horse slaughter and kill buyers exist it will continue!

They need us now more than ever! We cannot allow them to be left to starve or die while the government continues to turn a blind eye!

🇺🇸This Year of the Horse comes at a time when we have more momentum than ever before to permanently end horse slaughter and and protect our horses from the barbarism of the slaughter pipeline!

💔 Some stories simply break your heart.💔

🐴These precious mini horses all came from the same home and spent years together as a family. What their original owner never expected was that they would be separated.

🥲We learned that two have been inseparable companions for over 10 years. They grew up together. They worked together. They spent nearly every day of their lives side by side.

😩When they were sent to auction and separated, ( unknown to the original owner who cared for them deeply) Waffles was saved by a dear friend, but Apples ended up alone after being purchased at auction to another winning bid!;(

💔Seeing her standing in a pen there without her lifelong companion was heartbreaking. After a lifetime surrounded by her herd, she was suddenly alone in her golden years. 😩💔

❤️‍🩹We knew we couldn’t walk away.

🤩That’s why we’re stepping in to reunite Apples and Waffles and give them the retirement they deserve—together.

🫶Thanks to our wonderful friends in CO, we have a safe place waiting for them!

💰The cost to secure Apples, and reunite these best friends is $2,500. We have committed to securing her safety because we simply couldn’t bear the thought of these two spending the rest of their lives apart.

👉There is an important lesson in this story.
So often, people lovingly give away or sell their horses believing or being promised they are going to wonderful loving for ever homes . The reality is that none of us truly know where a horse may end up months or years later if circumstances change. 💔Even horses that are deeply loved can find themselves separated, passed from home to home, or vulnerable to entering the slaughter pipeline.

❤️‍🩹Apples and Waffles are living proof of how quickly life can change.
Today, we have the opportunity to give them the ending they deserve.
A chance to spend their remaining years together, grazing side by side, safe, loved, and never separated again!

🚨THE TRUTH ABOUT THE SLAUGHTER PIPELINE🚨

For over 20 years, thousands of American horses have been shipped to slaughter in Canada and Mexico. We are now closer than ever to ending this cruel pipeline, but we must keep pushing.

Every week, we find ourselves and other good homes and rescues bidding against kill buyers who profit by preying on horses that could otherwise be rehomed, rescued, or purchased by loving families. As long as the slaughter pipeline remains open, there is a financial incentive to funnel horses into this system.

Passing this federal legislation would help cut off that market, remove the profit motive for kill buyers, and give horses the chance at safe forever homes!

Math vs. Myth: Debunking Flawed Brumby Models

When the math isn’t mathing, look at the data. 🐴📉 A fierce standoff is unfolding in the Snowy Mountains over a basic question: How do you count a horse?

The NSW Government claims up to 16,411 Brumbies to justify intensive aerial culling. But independent biostatisticians are blowing the whistle on a deeply flawed methodology that ignores basic biology.

📊 The 41% vs. 20% Contradiction
The state’s aerial “distance sampling” models imply localized annual population growth rates of up to 41%. Under real-world scrutiny, that completely collapses:

The Biological Ceiling: A mare’s gestation is 11–12 months, producing just one foal per year.

The 20% Strict Limit: Even under absolute perfect, predator-free conditions, equine populations have a strict natural ceiling of a 20% annual increase.

A 41% spike is a biological impossibility. It points directly to flawed algorithms and double-counting.

🛑 Eradication by Phantom Numbers
Legally, the Heritage Management Plan mandates that 3,000 Brumbies must be retained. Yet, locals and independent observers estimate fewer than 1,000 horses actually remain on the ground. By culling based on inflated, algorithmically manufactured numbers, authorities risk wiping out these heritage herds entirely—pushing them past the point of no return.

🏗️ The Elephant in the Park: Snowy 2.0
While the spotlight is fixed on horses, the Snowy 2.0 hydro project causes massive, long-term habitat damage flying under the radar:

Over 100km of roadworks and high-voltage easements slicing through rare zones.

Excavation of 14 million cubic metres of spoil and severe water table drainage drying up alpine creeks.

📉 A Collapse of Public Trust
When wildlife management relies on opaque, locked-box data instead of transparent science, public trust breaks down. True conservation requires radical transparency, independent verification, and real biology—not phantom numbers on a spreadsheet.

As many of you know, barbaric aerial shootings from helicopters are happening right now in Kosciuszko National Park, killing Australia’s beautiful wild brumbies in the name of “invasive species” or “overpopulation “ or “feral animal control”

We like MANY Australians, local communities, horse advocates, and brumby supporters are devastated by the cruelty being infected and strongly dispute the population figures being used to justify this cull. Serious concerns have been raised about the accuracy of the estimates, and growth rates being reported do not add up.
For more than 150 years, local communities have managed brumby populations through mustering, rehoming, training, relocation, and other non-lethal management approaches! Humane alternatives were not considered before resorting to large-scale aerial shooting.
Regardless of where people stand there is need for greater transparency, independent oversight, and genuine consideration of humane alternatives.
