The U.S. effectively shut down domestic horse slaughter nearly two decades ago. So why are thousands of American horses still being slaughtered for meat?

Today, thousands of horses — including pets, workhorses, racehorses and rodeo horses — are purchased at auctions and shipped across the border to Canada and Mexico, according to a report by advocacy groups Animal Wellness Action, Center for a Humane Economy and Animals’ Angels. This isn’t what Americans want: a 2022 poll commissioned by the ASPCA showed that 83% of Americans oppose slaughtering horses for food.

‼️MYTH: Horse slaughter is a necessary evil without it tens of thousands of American horses will be neglected and abandoned each year. What will we do with all of those “unwanted horses”? FALSE! 😡‼️

✅ FACT: The truth is that healthy horses are being bought up at auction by kill buyers who can afford to OUTBID legitimate owners. In fact, the USDA found that more than 92% OF HORSES SENT TO SLAUGHTER ARE IN GOOD CONDITION but responsible buyers and rescue operations are unable to compete with industry middlemen known as kill buyers. Using USDA’s finding, only a tiny fraction of the horse population would require the help of equine sanctuaries or, as a last resort, humane euthanasia once we pass a ban. Make no mistake; HORSE SLAUGHTER IS PURELY A MONEY-MAKING OPERATION, NOT A HUMANE DISPOSAL SERVICE FOR OUR BELOVED HORSE COMMUNITY. ‼️
