Check out this fabulous gathering in honor of DAR Founder Mary Desha 👇🏻

Do you see the “Katherine Montgomery Chapter” name on the marker? That’s us! The Katherine Montgomery chapter merged with the Col. John Washington chapter in 2002 and we kept both names.

Mary Desha was the Founding Regent of the Katherine Montgomery Chapter, which she named in honor of her several times great grandmother who (so the family lore went) ran dispatches on horseback during the Revolutionary war! When she was stopped by a suspicious British soldier, she challenged him to a race and won, safely getting the dispatches to the American patriots! Sadly, Katherine Montgomery is now a red-lined patriot in the DAR GRS

Thanks to Madam DAR President General VanBuren for sharing this great event!

Happy 245th Birthday, America! 🇺🇸🥂🎉

The Col. John Washington - Katherine Montgomery Chapter was delighted to welcome DAR President General Denise VanBuren, DCDAR State Regent Cindy Hays, and Vice President General Ann Schaeffer to our Boundary Stone, NE #7 which our chapter has lovingly restored and preserved over the years. Happy Birthday Mrs. VanBuren! Thanks for stopping by!

Our boundary stone, placed in 1792, is one of 40 original stones that marked the 10-mile square outline of the District of Columbia - 36 are left. The Boundary Stones were the first National Landmark! DC Daughters are proud to serve as custodians for these wonderful stones! 💕

In February, DAR launched the new Patriots of Color database as part of the E Pluribus Unum Educational Initiative. The Patriots of Color database is devoted specifically to the service of patriots of a wide variety of backgrounds (African American, African, Native American, mixed ancestry) in the Revolutionary War. The database builds upon research that began in the DAR’s Forgotten Patriots resource guide. We’re excited to announce that the DAR Library has worked to expand the Patriots of Color database to include names and references from the Forgotten Patriots publication’s 2011 supplement as well. You can access the database here: http://www.dar.org/PatriotsOfColorDatabase (Learn more about the E Pluribus Unum Educational Initiative here: www.dar.org/EPU)

Thank you to all the women who served in the Vietnam War and are so often forgotten. It was a privilege to lay flowers at this memorial last Veterans Day

Did you know that over 10,000 women served during the Vietnam War?
While the names of all men and women lost during the Vietnam War are commemorated on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C., there is another monument specifically for the 10,000 women who served.
Just north of the Reflecting Pool is the Vietnam Women’s Memorial for those 10,000 women who served as nurses, air traffic controllers, communication specialists and more.
Be sure to visit (alongside all of the Vietnam Veteran Memorials) on your next trip to Washington DC.

Today is National Medal of Honor Day ⭐️ National Medal of Honor Day is celebrated every year on March 25, in honor of the first time it was awarded on March 25, 1863. The medal is the highest honor for military valor in action, and 3,526 people have been awarded the Medal of Honor, including 19 double recipients! There are 69 living recipients - heroes in our midsts 🇺🇸

The standards to award the Medal of Honor have evolved over time, but the Medal has always stood for actions that go above and beyond. The current criteria were established in 1963 during the Vietnam War.

The Medal is authorized for any military service member who “distinguishes himself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty
- While engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States;
-While engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force; or
-While serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party."

CJW-KM Daughters Irene and Christine picked up trash at Rock Creek Park today with the Rock Creek Conservancy to celebrate the first day of spring and to help keep our natural treasures healthy! Rock Creek also feeds the Potomac river (and then the Chesapeake) so conservation here has downstream impacts!

Did you know?
For the first time in a decade, the Potomac River’s health is in decline. According to the Potomac River “Report Card” the Potomac Conservancy releases every two years, the health of the river has declined from a “B” to a “B-” rating. Thanks to decades of hard work following the Clean Water Act of 1972, many indicators of the Potomac’s health are trending in the right direction, but it’s not out of the clear. Threats include polluted storm-water from urban and suburban areas, which is the fasting growing cause; this is exacerbated by deforestation and urban sprawl combined with higher-than-usual precipitation.

Things you can do to help get the river’s health trajectory back on track include investing in clean water as a public health priority; protect healthy forests; plant streamside trees to collect runoff; defend and strengthen laws that protect waterways; and plan river-friendly communities.

Happy Holidays! played Secret Santa again this year to 18 at U.S. VETS transitional housing program for vets working to get out of homelessness!

We dropped off half of the presents today before their distanced party on Tuesday. CJW-KM Daughters were proud to fulfill their wishlists for pots & pans, coats, boots, tablets, books, watches, and dishes.

We have been sponsoring veterans at U.S. VETS for the holidays since 2014!
