Action Project day! Our students at Turner Elementary had a blast creating beautiful posters, yard signs, and writing letters about the importance of waste control. Preventing litter is one of many ways that our students protect their watersheds, and we are so proud of our 4th graders who believe in spreading that message through visual arts and civic action! Bravo!

Our Environmental Education team has been visiting Turner Elementary and other District schools to run our Meaningful Watershed Education Experience (MWEE). Along with a coalition of other environmental education organizations (Casey Trees, Urban Adventure Squad, Nature Forward, and Anacostia Watershed Society, we have collectively served over 1,200 4th graders this school year! Our MWEE connects students to their local environment through a series of school visits, a field experience, and an action project. With a focus on watershed science, MWEEs allow a pathway for students to deepen their environmental literacy skills, critical thinking skills, and leadership qualities. For more information on how to sign your students up for one of our MWEEs, check out our website!

Our first FrogWatch of 2026 was a success! 🐸 The spring peepers and southern leopard frogs felt like showing off March 19, and we are eager to hear who will join the chorus this month! Thanks to and our 29 volunteers, we can continue to help these valuable species thrive on Kingman + Heritage Islands!

In case you're curious to hear the music of springtime for yourself, the spring peepers and southern leopard frogs have taken up residence at Kingman Island's vernal pool and the southern end of Heritage Island. After your late-day stroll down Kingman's trails, consider pausing to listen for their calls as you enjoy the sunset.

We would also like to extend our thanks to special guest star, the Kingman Beaver, for taking the time to offer us pointers on dam building! 🦫🪵

If you missed the March FrogWatch, registration for April 21st is open! Please hop on over to the Kingman Island events calendar or FrogWatch page to sign up, view our training videos, and join our iNaturalist project. If spots are full, check back in the days leading up to the watch!

Volunteer registration is now open to all amphibian enthusiasts! With your help, we can track the amphibians that call Kingman Island home.

FrogWatch USA is a nationwide community that counts frog calls and submits that data to an online database. As indicator species, studying our frogs and toads allows us to monitor the health of Kingman Island's ecosystem as a whole. The data our volunteers collect is vital to continue wetland conservation and ensure a safer future for the Island's small residents.

FrogWatch monitoring sessions are a wonderful way to get outside, learn frog calls, practice frog identification, and connect with other nature lovers in the District!

Visit https://www.kingmanisland.com/frogwatch to complete the video orientation, join our iNaturalist project, and register for the 2026 season.

FrogWatch monitoring sessions take place once a month, after sunset. Our sessions are free to attend!
