The death rate from alcohol-induced, drug overdose, and su***de causes were each down significantly in the United States in 2024 for the first time since 1999 (when datasets were initially published), and provisional data for 2025 signals this positive trend has continued.

This report explores what’s behind these recent downward trends, which demographic groups are still experiencing high rates of death from these causes, and how federal workforce and funding cuts are putting progress at risk.

Public health win: Su***de deaths among youth and young adults dropped 11% after the launch of the 988 Su***de Crisis Lifeline in 2022.

New research published in the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) is based on national data from July 2022 through December 2024. After the launch, expected su***des among young people declined from nearly 40,000 to about 35,500. The largest decreases occurred in states with the highest use of 988 services. Access the study here: https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/article-abstract/2848066

Su***de is the leading cause of death among adolescents and young adults in the U.S. The lifeline initiative was part of a $1.5 billion federal investment to expand the service nationwide and replace the previous 10-digit number with a three-digit number.

This May, Mental Health America is helping people have more good days by meeting them where they are, supporting them as whole people, and understanding that “good” is subjective.

Mental health and su***de prevention are connected, and we all have a role to play in supporting one another.

Let’s have more good days, together.

TOMORROW! Join the AAAS Center for Scientific Evidence in Public Issues and the Council of State Governments for a critical webinar about comprehensive frameworks for youth su***de prevention, grounded in public health and community approaches.

Most su***de prevention occurs in the moment of crisis—calls to hotlines, visits to the emergency department, etc.—targeted to individuals in immediate risk of death by su***de. Less attention is paid to interventions that happen well before the point of crisis—upstream approaches at the group, school, and community levels that prevent youth from getting to the point of crisis. Such methods are rooted in public health approaches and can start years before youth face mental health crises. What is the evidence that upstream approaches that create safe environments and belonging for teens can prevent youth su***de? What are the policy approaches that support upstream su***de prevention?

🎙️ Featuring: Sarah Brummett (Sources of Strength) and Holly Wilcox (Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health)

Too often, people living with mental illness are met with handcuffs instead of help.

Every year, millions of individuals with untreated mental health conditions enter the criminal justice system — not because they need punishment, but because they need care, understanding, and support.

Through Overlooked: Stories of Mental Illness & the Criminal Justice System, the National Alliance on Mental Illness is amplifying real stories from individuals and families impacted by this reality.

No one’s story should be ignored.

Together, we can raise awareness, advocate for change, and ensure people receive treatment, dignity, and hope — not criminalization.

Storytelling plays a pivotal role in su***de prevention, and Hollywood has the ability to transform help-seeking, model healing, and create widespread narrative change.

As the nation’s public-private partnership for su***de prevention, the Action Alliance is proud to support the Mental Health Storytelling Initiative, an independent coalition of 70+ entertainment and mental health partners providing practical guidance for authentic depictions of mental health and su***de.

This work is critical to promoting recovery, connection, and life-saving resources.

It is important to incorporate the perspectives of people with su***de-centered lived experience in all su***de prevention efforts. Centering lived experience helps build connection, and when we feel a sense of connectedness, we can be open to being ourselves and strengthen our trust in others.
