Innovation in humanitarian action is not about chasing the newest idea. It is about finding better ways to serve people in their moments of greatest need.

It often starts quietly: a volunteer adapting to a changing reality, a community finding its own solutions, a National Society rethinking how it delivers support.

True innovation is rooted in humanity. It listens, it includes, and it responds to real needs. And when we get it right, it does not just improve how we work – it transforms what is possible for the communities we serve.

I’m deeply honored to be named to the 2026 TIME100 Philanthropy list alongside so many individuals working to create a more compassionate and just world.

This recognition belongs not only to me, but to the entire International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies network — our volunteers, National Societies, and staff whose humanity, dedication, and courage make a difference every single day in communities around the world.

At a time when humanitarian needs continue to grow, I remain inspired by the power of solidarity, local action, and our shared commitment to humanity.

In a world often defined by crisis and uncertainty, it is often the smallest acts of kindness that carry the greatest meaning - a hand extended, a moment of care, a decision to stand by someone in need.

Every day, across our IFRC network, volunteers and staff turn compassion into action. They remind us that humanity is not an abstract ideal - it is something we choose, again and again, through how we treat one another.

A small act of kindness can change a life. And when multiplied across communities, it can change the world.

There is a common assumption that once conflict falls silent, reconstruction replaces relief. But reality is more complex.

The needs change. They do not disappear. Livelihoods must be rebuilt. Mental health support becomes even more essential. Food security remains fragile. Education systems need restoration. Shelter must be secured. These challenges are especially acute for returnees, who often come back with hope but without resources.

During my conversations across Syria in February 2026, these themes came up again and again.

Six decades on, the world has changed in profound ways. Our Fundamental Principles have not. They continue to guide how we act, how we make decisions, and how we serve.

They ask us not only to uphold them, but to live them—especially when choices are difficult and the path is not clear.

And they call on us to support those who, every day, lead with compassion and act with courage.

Sixty years have passed. The world has changed. Yet our Fundamental Principles remain our compass, our conscience, our identity. I invite all of us to renew a simple but powerful promise: Not only to honour these principles but to live them. To pass them on to the next generation not only in words,....

As Super Typhoon Sinlaku moves across Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, I’m seeing firsthand what it means to respond in moments of crisis.

This level-5 operation has mobilized nearly 100 Red Crossers across Guam and CNMI, working alongside local emergency managers, FEMA, and community partners as they assess damage and support affected communities. More than 1,000 people have already sought shelter.

In every response, it is the volunteers who stand out—those who step forward, often in the most difficult conditions, to support their neighbors. Their commitment is a quiet but powerful force, and a reminder of what it means to serve with humanity.

During my visits, I make it a priority to meet with the communities we serve - to better understand their needs, challenges, and aspirations.

The proximity of our National Societies to their communities enables us to design our programmes based on their specific contexts, cultures, and needs, while empowering people to actively participate and shape the support they receive. This is localization in action.

I am deeply grateful to the American Red Cross for endorsing my candidacy for IFRC President at the General Assembly in November 2026. As a volunteer of the American Red Cross for 45 years, this support is especially meaningful to me.

In a time of growing humanitarian needs, this support reflects the importance of steady, principled leadership and the strength of our global network. Thank you for your trust!

▶️ A message from Croatia.

At the Croatian Red Cross Education Center, I saw firsthand how the next generation of volunteers is being shaped.

For me, this work is central to the future of the IFRC network. Teaching young people the history, values, and Fundamental Principles is not only about understanding—it’s about nurturing empathy, compassion, and a deep sense of responsibility for others.

Investing in people is how the network continues to grow stronger.
