GFWC International President Suellen Brazil convened Amy Sanchez, CEO of the Battered Women’s Justice Project, and MOSAIC Initiative Co-Directors Lynn Rosenthal and Rosie Hidalgo—national leaders in the effort to end domestic and sexual violence, online sexual exploitation, and trafficking—to explore opportunities for collaboration and community impact.

Through education, advocacy, service, and community engagement, GFWC members are uniquely positioned to help create safer communities and stronger futures for women, children, and families. President Brazil noted, “We are proud that national leaders recognize GFWC as an important partner in this work and are seeking our involvement in advancing solutions.”

Opportunities are ahead to learn and take action—including MOSAIC’s upcoming webinar on online safety and GFWC’s International Day of Service on September 26.

Now is the time for members to engage, show up, and help drive this work forward to prevent violence and exploitation in our communities.

It's WHRC Wednesday! Let's close out the Stroke Awareness Month of May with a look back at a Community Improvement Project focused squarely on assisting people living with the aftermath of a stroke: The Stroke Club of Fredericksburg, Virginia, co-sponsored by the Woman's Club of Fredericksburg and the Easter Seal Society.

As an area with a large number of retirees, Fredericksburg was in true need of additional services for older residents. The Woman's Club worked with other local organizations to provide resources, guidance, assistance, and socialization for stroke survivors and their families. The Stroke Club organized field trips, connected families to education and assistance, donated food, offered help getting handicapped car tags, loaned wheelchairs and other equipment, worked on community awareness, raised funds for all of this and more, and even helped start another such club in nearby Richmond. As the Woman's Club noted in their CIP contest summary, "it was obvious that this [level of comprehensive effort] would be a job for volunteers if it was to be accomplished."

The CIP contest entry includes letters, citations, project plans, thank-you notes, photographs, and some copies of the educational resources provided by the Easter Seals, American Heart Association, and more. They even wrote an update the following year, telling us how the prize money helped with their continued work--because, don't worry, GFWC Woman's Club of Fredericksburg won second place in the national Community Improvement Contest for this project.

📷From the CIP contest submission, we have two photos of a 1980 field trip to the White House, where Stroke Club members were warmly welcomed by President Jimmy Carter, along with an assortment of stroke awareness materials provided to club members. It's WHRC Wednesday! May is National Historic Preservation Month, first celebrated in 1973. This year's theme was designated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, in honor of the 250th birthday of the United States: ALL PEOPLE ARE CREATED EQUAL. American history can be told through buildings both grand and unassuming, whether associated with nationally-known stories or with tales of local importance. GFWC clubs know this to be true, and have worked for over a century to help preserve the buildings and landscapes that are important both to their communities and to the country at large.

Here are four of the many examples in the GFWC Women's History and Resource Center collections, giving just a hint of our work from Independence Hall to a one-room rural schoolhouse, and many buildings in between. Check out the image captions to learn more about each project.

Is your club working on an historic preservation project, whether for your own clubhouse or for a building in your community? Have you taken part in, or celebrated, a site's restoration in the past? Let us know in the comments, and help us grow the stories of GFWC's involvement in historic preservation!
